  • My Provent install on a PD engine.

    5 words up front I must say....... 'No I won't do yours'

    it was a bastard of a job, it was many hours worth of pain and I'm quite over it.

    Although I'm glad it's in.

    I was planning on making this a step by step guide, but that idea went out the window when I realised the install wasn't going to be as simple as I thought.

    The Provent is an excellent piece of kit, it is made from what appears to be ABS plastic.

    My install comprised of the following:

    16 x 16-27mm metal hose clamps
    6 x 25 mm plastic irrigation elbows
    2 x ~12mm hose clamps
    2 x 25mm M10 bolts
    2 x M10 Nylock nuts
    2 x brass washers
    1 x piece of (make a bracket)
    1 x 13mm irrigation plug
    ~1 x length of 25MM clear vinyl tubing
    ~ 100mm of 12.5mm clear vinyl tubing
    1 x Provent 200


    I very quickly realised that I'd be making a contribution of sweat, blood and burnt skin to finish this install, so here goes....

    Engine bay, Prior to install, air filter lid removed.


    Provent mounted to a piece of 'make a bracket', after testing various install positions in the engine bay, the red lines indicate the portion that had been cut off to accommodate a cleaner install.
    The unit has also been dropped 1 ring in the bracket.


    Provent unit installed, and hoses connected, orange glow courtesy of 2 x 500W halogen work lights. it was getting late in the day and I was needing dinner.


    Provent resting in battery tray, a later design will involve me removing the battery and making a right angle bracket that the battery will sit on top of to hold the Provent stable.
    Presently it sits quite firm and doesn't wiggle much as the 25mm hoses keep it in check.



    the CCV outlet hose and 25mm elbow have been replaced, this was because I had cut the pipe slightly short and it was slightly slipping out of the hose.

    this was not due to heat or due to engine oil, but due to the uneven clamping force on the pipe end.

    when using irrigation elbows, make sure that the barb is ground down a bit to allow you to remove it from the pipe, as pictured once they are inserted into vinyl plastic they cut a groove into the tube and can not be removed.

    not included in the above is the plugged hose on the bottom of the Provent to seal the unit from outside air and to stop the oil leaking.

    by using this method I have retained the factory CCV breather tube to the turbo inlet tube, the engine cover sits on the engine with a very slight lift at the back right corner, I will provide an updated pic shortly.

    all products except the Provent were purchased from Bunnings, the Provent came from Neil at Sydney Filters.

    Hopefully this guide will be helpful to many others.

    Looks just the thing for those troublesome MK1 diesels that "run away". Not a cure for the problem perhaps but a good delaying tactic!

    Does anybody have a competitive price and the name of a supplier who will mail out?

      Nice work, you've plumbed it well. Always tricky to work with the two vertical inlet and outlets on the engine. I hope the tubing and elbows withstand the heat though!

      The provent is a decent size, which again is half the nightmare.

      You'll be amazed how often you have to drain it!

        elbows are about $1.50 each, and 1M of 25mm hose is only $5.

        I'm looking at making up some heat shielding to shroud the hoses from the turbo heat, this should extend the lifetime of the joinery exponentially.

        one thing I've realised is when the car is stopped, the rear of the air intake just sucks in the heat from the aircon+intercooler+radiator thermo fans.

        This probably works well in cooler climates, but in Australia on a 38C day, the last thing I want is 38C+aircon+intercooler+radiator heated air being sucked into my air intake prior to the turbo.

        this must be a killer on the overall engine performance.

          Nice instalation. Did you think about getting silicon hoses? Plastic one will brake down over the time.

            at this stage I'm not overly concerned with the stability of the materials as I will be frequently inspecting the unit over the next 5,000 KM.

            hose selection was more of a 'lets see if I can get this to fit under the bonnet without having to chop up my stock CCV breather tube'.

            moving forward I am scouting to find:
            A good quality oil and heat tolerant 25mm hose.
            25mm copper or brass elbows.

            out of the 3 Bunnings I went to only 1 had 25mm copper elbows and they were out, the others didn't stock them unfortunately.

            I will also be looking to replace the mounting bracket with a sturdier design that the battery sits on top of.

            the hardest part for me was not having a 12V backup rig to connect to the car, if I did I could remove the battery to get easier access to the hose connections.

              Let me know if you find anything hose wise, as I went to a hose specialist, and there was either HUGE, of the rather unflexy, tough as nails hose I have at present. Rather hard to work with! Cost a bit too!

                Where is the best place to buy a Provent.

                I have oil seeping from the lower intercooler piping, time to take action.

                      Provent in T5.

                      Very easy to install in T5 no elbows needed just use silicon hose which is more flexible than rubber hose.
                      The bracket is fixed using existing threaded hole that also holds the added Anderson plug for connecting CTEK battery charger to charge the battery since I do many short trips during the day.

                        So you have a tube running from the bottom of the provent that has a stopper in it? I am reading the items list but unable to see the 12.5mm tube in the pics but see you mentioned it. Are you draining the oil through this pipe, and is it effective?

                        Clean install again it must be said.
