VW brochures for Golf and Tiguan and probably others specify Diesel 51CZ. I am told by VW customer service that 51CZ is European for 51CN and not that the typist was dyslexic. Polo brochure specifies 49CN.

How does VW expect customers to fuel vehicles with diesel produced to min 46 CN as per the diesel standard which does not meet their specification, when high cetane diesel is not widely available??? (Except for people who can get Caltex Vortex Diesel or BP Ultimate Diesel.)

46 CN is minimum, real CN could be higher. Buy BP Diesel it should be 50CN minimum.

Diesel fuel standard specifies minimum 46CN. Production diesel is typically higher, but not mandatory for it to be that way, so the actual results depend on random batches of crude oil.

So knowing now that BP Ultimate is simply standard diesel with an additive package, I am experimenting with additive packages.

Since I have a tank of standard diesel, I thought I'd try a cetane improver. Morey's Diesel Smoke Killer claims up to 5CN cetane improvement as well as having a biocide, injector cleaner and lubricity additive. Sounds similar to BP Ultimate. Can't so far track down what type of cetane improver Morey's has out of curiosity. The MSDS only goes as far describing 50% as petroleum mid-distillate.

Wikipedia mentions three types of cetane improver - dimethyl ether (from biodiesel); alkyl nitrates (in BP ULtimate) and di-tert-butyl peroxide.

This post mentions alkyl nitrates, primary amyl nitrates, nitrites, and peroxides as cetane improvers.

Morey's will cost me 3.5c/L of diesel treated (Morey's at $23/L; saw an adelaide source with it for $15/L), which with standard diesel presently will cost me less than the premium and undiscounted price of BP Ultimate, plus it has a biocide (but no antifoam?).

Using standard diesel today, I did notice smoke out the back under acceleration in the light of the following car's headlights. Will have to pay more attention from now....

People very often notice improvement after they put the bottle of the injector cleaner in the tank of fuel but it is very often just a placebo effect.
From the time you put taht additive in you simply want to get better fuel economy and change your driving style - and you will get better fuel economy.

I'm not expecting any change in performance with high cetane or using Morey's diesel smoke killer. I would only expect performance to change if the injectors were dirty and a different product cleaned them out.

I can say for sure that with my petrol car (Mazda), which appears to have an intermittent injector problem causing a cylinder to seem to go down, that most injector cleaners so far have done nothing until Techron.

Morey's added to standard diesel seems to have gotten rid of the harsh engine note and reduced smoke out the back.

I have used Morey's diesel additive in my old diesel Pajero and our just replaced 05 2.0 TDI Comfortline. The new TDI GT will also get a regular dose. It will cut down the smoke and the engine does run smoother. As well, it has a biocide that works. The Pajero had a CAV glass bowl fuel filter and water collector that was always as clean as a whistle. I found that you could use it every second full tank if you have a reliable supply of good fuel. I also use Moreys Upper Cylinder Lubricant in my current petrol Pajero, and we go bush a fair bit and never know what the fuel quality will be like. I know that a lot of people look at fuel additive's with scorn, but I have a long history working on vehicles from my apprenticeship as a mechanic through working on my own vehicles for a lot of years and I will stand by the results that Morey's give. And no, I have no affiliation with the company at all. Do you know that Morey's are a NZ company?

Just driven half the tank with it and I will comment if there was any improvement in the fuel economy. The fuel gauge reading looks promising.

* injector cleaner (?isoparaffins - solvent)
* cetane improver (2-ethylhexyl nitrate)
* 60% kerosene

No biocide mentioned.


I have to admit being previously skeptical about fuel additives. The fact that BP Ultimate Diesel is standard diesel with additives is what swayed me to consider diesel additives.

(I did have some Duralt years ago but never managed to convince myself it did anything.)
