Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Chopped off the shark fin :(

So I was backing into the garage the other day and didn't realise it didn't open up fully, then KER-RUNCH! Snapped the shark fin antenne right off

What can I do about it?

Just think yourself lucky it was only the shark fin. It could have been a lot worse if the roller door was just 5cm lower.

Depends if you want to replace with OEM part or get a copy... plus how long you can afford to have the car off the road as it possibly won't be weather-proof with a broken antenna housing.

JKU have these (you would have to check if they're in stock): genuine VW Shark Fin GPS Antenna in Piano Black OEM 3C0035507P Euro Car Upgrades

Do you know if they are easy to install? I only need the black plastic shark fin replaced - I've snapped the triangular fin off the black bottom bit, rather than the whole black thing.I've currently masking taped the gap so it's rain proof (and that's real handy in Melbourne! )

I haven't done this one but I believe you may need to remove a few of the trims and drop the head liner to get access to the nut holding the antenna in place... that is if you have sat nav. If you have a non-sat nav car it'll just be a decoration antenna (I believe) so you should just be able to remove with fishing wire like debadging. You may still have a hole in the roof where the sat-nav cable would have gone so you'll have to replace with another "antenna" to cover the hole.

Don't quote me on this as I don't have a Scirocco - maybe someone else can confirm, however I believe this is the case.

Non-sat nav luckily...yeah there's a hole there where the antenne has snapped off, but it probably is decoration like you said because the radio still works and there's no electronics in the fin.
