Time to replace tyres

    Just read through these and I have actually gone out on a limb after reading some australian reviews on tyres and got the Maxxis MZA-1's...
    I did not get very many km's out of my set of potenzas at all and at what they were quoting i was going to lean towards the GYear F1's but then i read the review. I have to get my receipt but it was less than half the replacement cost of the Potenzas.
    I went for 245/35/19 so a little bit wider.
    It was at 20 000km when i swapped over and i am at 55 000kms now and looks great still. It has so much more mid corner grip than i use to get with the potenzas... If i got on it midway through a fast sweeping corner or roundabout they use to lose a bit or becoming loose. The Maxxis just pulls through and wet weather traction is literally 3 times better.
    It was cheap enough to give it a go and see if the reviews were full of it but it ended up being a very good gamble.
    Unless if i drove in another scirocco with goodyears or other brands to literally feel it's significantly better it's hard to argue against them.

      I couldn't buy Maxxis with a clear conscience as they are distributed in Australia by one of the business arms of a religious cult called the Exclusive Brethren.

      They could stick like ***** on your shoe, cost 10c & last forever & I still couldn't support that lot.

        OP, i'm just about to swap over the Potenza's as they're faded now and not offering any confidence on the road. got probably 40,000 good km out of them with a rotation at 20k. swapping at 50,000.

        went with tire-rack and got landed for $1300 a set of Continental things..

        also, for a bit of research try tyrereviews dot co dot uk for a good database of user tyre reviews.

          hey vwryogi, that's good work out of the Bridgestone's. My rears will be due in about another 5000 so I'll get onto Rubal again and get them sent up from VIC.

          I'll ensure that when they are fitted in Brisbane that the guys are a bit more careful, the front alloys have got some nasty chips out of them. Didn't really notice until I washed it The rims were in mint condition beforehand. Grrrrrrrrrr

            First I do not rotate tyres, just a ploy by dealers to wear out the entire set quicker. Original Bridgestone fronts were done around 35k and the rears still look brand new at 40k. Replaced fronts with Michelin Pilot Super Sports at $800 each and they are just fantastic and so much better than Bridgestone.

              You paid $800 each for PSS? WTF?. My local tyre store sells 245/35/19 PSS for $309 each. Delivery to ACT would be $60. Fitting $20 each.

              re: rotation. The set doesn't wear quicker - the wear is what it is. What does happen is that the tyres wear more evenly & you don't end up with aged tyres which are more dangerous than bald tyres IMO.

                I hope that's $800 for a pair (still too expensive however)

                With over 60% weight up front where the power delivery and turning happens, I feel FWD cars wear the fronts somewhat quicker.
                I'm trying to see if 1 rear set will last the same distance as 2 front sets
                It's a bit of a shock to the system buying 4 tyres at the same time.

                If you have asymmetric tread you can only rotate front to rear

                I have friends who put much more wear on the left front than the other three tyres
                I think it's because their normal route encounters a lot of roundabouts
                (I also suspect excessive braking and turning at the same time - that's a hard habit to change)
                Anyway - as the tyres have identical tread we were able to swap the tyres on the rims
                so the front left outside is now the front right inside.
                That's a good example of trying to balance the wear...

                  3 fronts to 1 rear without rotation unless the back end works really hard.

                    Asymmetrical can be rotated to any corner so long as the "outside" marking is pointing outside so long as the tyre shop mounted them properly then it's always pointing outside.

                      It looks like there's a nail in my rear tyre, got a tyre pressure warning on sunday and even after pumping then, got it again on wednesday.

                      Going to Goodyear Croydon on Tuesday so Rubal can have a look. Looking at F1 A2 from all the recommendations. I'm thinking replace the rears only...should I go for all 4?

                      LOL this place is like 20 times the distance from my local goodyear

                        I have replaced my dunlop sportmaxx GT's with kumho PS91's and am very happy. Good wet and dry grip and quieter than the Dunlops.

                            Same problem and end result - you can't even out tyre wear by swapping the inside edge to the outside edge

                              Its always very subjective unless you have both sets available at the same time but trying to compare at about the 10000km mark on both- i.e. about half worn, I think the PS91's are at least as good and still believe hey are quieter-19inch rims, 35 profile

                                When was the last time you saw a non-directional, symmetrical tyre that you'd actually put (or would fit) on 18/19" rims? Even if there was you'd still have to unmount/mount the tyres from rim to rim to get the outside to become the inside on a different corner
