  • TargaRacing Scirroco R race car.

    Hi all,

We have just completed a new build on a 2013 Scirocco R to be used in various motorsport classes around Australia.

It is primarily set up for Production Touring Cars and the Australian Manufacturers Championship (AMCHAMP) so we are very limited to the mods we can do.

We chose the DSG Scirocco over the manual as the quicker shifts suit our purpose on the track. So far the list of mods includes –

    Coilovers
    Upgraded brake pads
    Aux engine oil cooler
    Aux turbo coolant return cooler
    PWR radiator
And all the required safety gear (seat, harness, roll cage, etc)

We ran the car at the Bathurst Motor Festival over the Easter weekend in the Production Touring Class. The car ran like
a clock and we managed a best time of 2.37 on the control Hankook R spec tyre.

We had a brake pad issue in the last race on Saturday, which kept us from doing the one-hour on the Sunday. Although this was disappointing we came away on a high knowing just how great the car was and that improvement will continue.

We will be running it this weekend at Wakefield Park in the www.modernsportscars.com.au 2 one-hour enduros.

Thanks to Guy Harding and his great team of boys for their assistance so far!!

    Chris.

            Great photos.
What suspension are you running Chris?

Also, any plans for a BT or are the rules very particular in regards to engine mods?

This is very cool. From someone with aspirations of turning my golf R into a racecar one day I'd love to see photos of the mods you have done and any issues you've come across along the way.

                  Thanks guys,

The car has very limited mods and we subscribe to the KISS principle!!

Work includes a custom dump pipe and full exhaust, which does away with the cat converter, a custom made PWR radiator, oil cooler using custom made adaptor plate for the cooler hoses. This locates behind the bumper on the RH side. We have also added a water to air cooler on the LH side which cools the super heated water as it exits the turbo before it returns to the radiator.

Over the years and many builds we have tried all sorts of suspension. What we have done with this car is use some cheaper shocks from China, which have very good build quality for the housings and swap the internal seals and springs with our custom requirements. This gives us a great shock at a fraction of the cost. We guessed the spring rates based on previous cars and it looks like we are well and truly in the ballpark.

Inside we have the full roll cage and safety gear.

At Bathurst out of the box I managed a 2.38. We did a couple of small adjustments and I got into the 2.37’s but the car felt better. Only when the race was over did I realised I hadn’t turned the A/C off…

Next mod will be an LSD.

I'm looking forward to the races this weekend at Wakefield Park to do a few more adjustments.

                  Chris.

Sorry for the delay in replying, we've had 3 race weekends at 3 different tracks in 2 States using 9 different cars...... Suffice to say we have been busy!!

The www.modernsportscars.com.au weekend was great. We opted to run the R on the control Hankook tyre that we have to use in Prod Touring and used the weekend as an extended test program. We played around a bit with the suspension to get it in a window that we were happy with and having reviewed the results think we might need to up the spring rates just a touch for tracks like Wakefield. We also suffered some overheating of the front brakes which resulted in some melting of the wiring for the ABS sensors however they still functioned fine. We will be setting up some brake ducts to feed cool air onto the rotor and bring the temps back under control. The car ran like a jet over the 2 one hour races and tyre wear was not too bad. As expected the LHF suffered a bit on the outer edge. The fastest time was a 1.08 flat which considering the lack of mods and the fact we were on R spec tyres we are happy with. We struggled a bit out of the fishhook with traction so the LSD is moving closer to the top of the mods list. We finshed first in class (but we were the only ones in it!!) and 5th outright on the Sat and 7th outright on the Sunday after getting a penalty for pit lane speeding...

Next outing will be the VW nats at the end of the month so we are looking forward to that.

A few pics of the weekend -

Nice work! Just make sure you get a good plate LSD in there.

Yeah agree, that's a great time at Wakefield considering this thing is practically stock. Amazing what a difference the R compounds make or was it a 140 treadwear? Well done Chris.

I'd be interested to see how you setup the brake cooling ducts. Please take some photos mate
