  • Exhaust rattle and slight interior (dash?) knock

    Hi All,

I've had my R for about 1.5 months going on 2500km, and since having it whenever I use the manual DSG or S, gears 2-3 (or sometimes 4 when I get up to greater speeds) I get a distinct exhaust rattle/zing when I get up into the higher revs. The sound can be heard closer to the tail I think, possibly the end pipes. It's like a reverbration sound.

Has anyone else experienced this before? Is this common?

Also, I've recently notice a slight knock around the dash area. It sounds like something under the dash like cabling or venting that's rubbing or tapping up onto the dash when I go over bumps and humps etc.

Would these be something that I could take into VW to inspect as part of warranty?

With regard to the dash knock, if they need to remove the dash would you even bother? As I'm sure that by removing the dash, it'll be a receipe for more knocks and rattles in future?

Thanks in advance for any help and advice!

    Cheers,

    Andy

That exhaust sound is due to the bi-mode valve opening and closing

as to the knock in the dash, I don't have this so do not have anything to say perhaps someone who has experienced this and had a fix will weigh in.

^ Thanks for your input on this... Least I don't have to worry too much about the exhaust.

Mine had a rattle that I was sure was the exhaust, as I thought I first noticed it after I had a new TBE system fitted and it seemed like it was coming from the rear of the car. I had the workshop check the exhaust install and it was all fine. Anyway long story short after a whole bunch of dramas with my car I found out it was in fact the Dual Mass Flywheel, quite a major component and was replaced under warranty when I had all my other clutch issues fixed.

Might not be the same thing but worth having your mechanic check perhaps next time you're in for a service.

          ^ Thanks mate.

I actually rounded it down to be something inside the cabin, I have a feeling it could be the springs under the seats or something like that. I'll be getting the workshop to check on the next service nonetheless.

Also update regarding the dash knock. I found that the issue was actually coming from the plastic rain facia that covers the windscreen. It's the black plastic cover the allows water to drain down. Our sciroccos are a two peice that joins and comes together in the middle. I noticed that mine wasn't fitted properly and I had to press them back together so it joins up properly. After that, the knocking/rattle that I thought was in the dash disappeared. Damn Portugal assemblers!

          Cheers,

Ill throw my 2 cents in; after a couple of weeks of owning my scirocco I noticed symptoms exactly as your described, to the tee.
I mentioned it to VW and they went on a speal about booking it in and not sure if it might need to be back a few times blah blah blah..

Anyway, I got over it one day after my friends started noticing it, so we all sat in the car and replicated it over and over and over again until we found that it was coming from the Armrest AND if my passenger left their arm on it with a little force the sound stopped, we put it all the way up and had a look on the underside.
Theres a plastic fascia under there which you can pull off with a little force, behind that is a plastic flap... literally just a flap of plastic, under high car load it vibrates a lot and makes that sound.

Fixed it up by chucking in 3 spots of hot glue (between the armrest and that flap) and haven't heard it since.
