Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Buying Scirocco

    Hi Guys,

I'm looking to buy a new car, currently I'm undecided between a MK6 R or a Scirocco R. I heard that the Scirocco is largely based on a MK5 GTI? Is this true?

Which year Scirocco would be the one to get? Did any particular years get drive train updates or anything of the nature? I drove a MY11 R which seemed excellent value for money.

Mk5 and mk6 use the same chassis as far as I know. our Sciroccos are the updated models that bring it up to mk6 status. Internally, the dash is based on the EOS with mk HVAC. in 2013, the HVAC was furher updated to keep the interior fresh.

Nothing mechanical is changed as far as I know as the car and engine has been pretty bullet proof.

Though the Mk6 Golf R uses the same engine, the difference in drive train and weight makes the cars feel quite different to drive.

In the end you have to decide if you want a 4 seat coupe or a 4dr car

The Mk3 Scirocco is underpinned by the same platform used on both the Mk5 and Mk6 Golf, with minor changes (to allow for variances in wheelbase, track, etc).

The Mk3 Scirocco R and Mk6 Golf R use a version of the EA113 4-cylinder direct-injection engine that was first introduced on the Mk5, and was used on the Mk5 GTI (although in 'R' form the engine's internals are strengthened, and it runs a larger K04 turbocharger). The Mk6 Golf GTI, Mk7 Golf GTI and Mk7 Golf R all run the newer EA888 engine.

Interior-wise, as mr gee has said, the dashboard and many of the trimmings are shared with the pre-facelift Eos (as the cars were made in the same factory in Portugal), which is much closer to the Mk5 Golf than Mk6. Some elements (climate control, radio, instruments and display (but not binnacle), some switchgear etc) are virtually identical to the Mk6 Golf R.

The biggest differences between Mk3 Scirocco and Mk6 Golf R are, really:
      • Front wheel drive versus Haldex part-time AWD
      • 2-door low-slung hatchback versus 4-door upright hatchback
      • Wider track for better cornering stability and predictability in the Scirocco

and much lighter. The Scirocco in DSG form is around 240kgs lighter without the 4WD system.
