Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Its all just a delaying tactic to make it hard, so not everyone does it. My experience of customs are that if its one for your own use, they dont care. If its heaps of em to make a fortune, expect to pay handsomely.

The rules are constantly changing and can be interpreted differently in different circumstances. There is always a loophole or an exception in an Aussie system.

Eg : I have been trying to get my VR6 converted Ibiza to comply with an RTA emissions test, so that I can get it engineered. Having downtuned it, so that it just about runs, I was told by the RTA that there are no test slots until April. However, they did tell me that not all engineers require their test. I then simply rang round and found an old feller who has been an RTA approved engineer for years and was not interested in the emissions test, simply the modifications I had made and his fee!

Madness, but at least it will soon be legal and then I`ll get it tuned properly

I've never heard of that one.
If it's an Aussie VR6 then it should not require an emissions test.
I know of a lot of engine swaps and if it has an Aussie engine number.......

Hi Brackie, sorry to upset you mate! I was pretty fed up when I'd looked into the possibility of getting a Corrado in Oz (short of finding out where Jay lives!!) Having looked into it a few months back I just thought how crap the whole system is - things like that really get my back up and make me more determined to get round it (legally, I hasten to add!)

Anyway, I think the caffeine's kicking in so I should try and calm down as well - it's good to have found a decent forum like this and have found some useful info (amongst some bunk of course!!) plus a lot of people passionate about their cars! Mind you, I did have an agreement with my wife that if I can get a Corrado she can pick the main family/sensible car?? She keeps threatening me with a Smart ForFour?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? So Jay mate, if you're reading this spare a thought for me, huh??

Its gonna cost me $800 for the report, but it covers multiple areas. Engine, Wheels, Brakes, Exhaust and few other bits of the conversion. And no emissions test. I want everything on the report so that I dont get defected by the cops. Should be ready soon and a cruise on Sunday.

impressive. thats a lot cheaper than i expected.

back to this discussion on corrados.

If we could get a certain number of definate sales it wouldnt be that hard to get some into the country.
It just needs someone to apply for the RAWS certification as the corrado has SEVS approval in both VR6 and G60 guise. I think it would actually make a good business idea as the cars wouldnt be that hard to move surely. Certainly something id be willing to invest in given the opportunity.

How much do you envisage one costing, once complied here.

the problem lies in the costs involved in attaining RAWS status.
We are talking thousands of dollars per vehicle type. So that is why u need to guarentee a certain number. to recoup the fees.

Id think sourcing them from asia would be the go. They would be cheaper and in better condition than from the UK. I cant say ive investigated it properly. but landed and complied im sure they could be sold for 15k if in excellent condition with a healthy margin. there would also be a side business in parts too.

RAWS requires a car for crashing and a workshop to comply the cars, no reason it would need to cost that much.

Are Asian ones LHD, the conversion rips the arse out of the cost.

Dont dismiss the UK as a source of cars, the larger engined ones will be cheap as the insurance is so much.

hmm i wasnt aware of the crashing part. But RAWS requires money. I think thats the biggest limiting factor.

Hmm i didnt think of the LHD thing. curse those asians and their obsession with LHD cars! hehe

But yeah. people need to start showing the colour of their money and we could get a workshop to apply for permission to comply this car.

Biggest problem with UK cars is rust isnt it? but yeah. £3500 buys a nice car in the UK doesnt it? by the time u get it here and allow a couple grand to cover compliance costs youd be close to 15kAUD.

Just depends on how much RAWS thingo costs. Ill see if i can find the info on the DOTARS site.

Be careful that you don't waste too much time and money on this as others have tried and failed. People were refused before because it was too close to a Golf which was sold here.

If it looks like you can bring them in, pick an engine that is available here so that it does not have to be tested. This may save thousands.
The digifant engine is the same as Golf, VR6 is not complied.

You do not have to crash test them.
