Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • GTC GT-CX 18" Stretch with 225 Tyres?

    Hey guys,

Just had some new wheels installed, got the GTC GT-CX in Hypersilver, 18 inch and got some 225 RE003 tyres for them.

I am wondering if it is normal for the lip so stick out like this (see picture), when googling photos it didn't seem to quite look the same, but maybe I am not looking at the same tyre size, does anyone have any experience?

    That's how I'd expect a 225/40 to sit on a 8.5.
Some aftermarket wheels are slightly wider overall, dunno about the gtc though
    Bora gone

Hmm fair enough, probably just paranoid after seeing some images from the BMW forums.

+1 to what dylan said, that's exactly how I'd also expect a 225 on x 8.5 to look, tyres vary in width between manufacturers so that might play a part in the look.

The GTCs used to come out of the same factory as VMR.. not sure if they still do.

That makes sense, and yes I believe they are.

          This was the post I was referring to, BMW 1 Series Coupe Forum / 1 Series Convertible Forum (1M / tii / 135i / 128i / Coupe / Cabrio / Hatchback) (BMW E82 E88 128i 130i 135i) - View Single Post - GTC Wheels | GT-CX 1 Series Exclusive Fitment | 3 Finishes in stock

It looks like the tyre covers the lip.

In that first photo you can see it lift if off the wheel slightly, the rest look slightly different and could be a bit deceptive in the photos
Tyres in the pics could have a slightly bigger rim protector?

I'm running 225/40 on my 18x8.5 VMR wheels with the factory Bridgestone Potenza S001 and they don't look as stretched as your photos

Some rim designs accentuate it by having a more prominent lip. I'm running 235/35s on a set of 8.5" HREs and the lip sits quite proud too. Not quite as much as yours perhaps, but not far off - certainly well beyond the tyre rim protector.

Thank you, yeah I figured some wheels would have big lips sticking out, my worry is just that the lip is not the same for everyone, eg. the picture above of the same wheel without the lip sticking out.
