Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • What would cause this damage?

    Hi All,

I went to change my strut top and bearing today when I discovered there was a bit more damage than I expected to see.

What I'm wondering is, what would cause this? Maybe over tightening?

I don't know why they're upside down... They're perfectly upright on my machine.

Were they new when installed, or previously on other suspension?

        Hi Dylan.
The spring cap is original i believe. The strut tops and bearings were replaced within 20k ago.

wonder if when the first nut was tightened down the spring hat didnt locate.
I had a similar issue with me mk3 cup kit.

Wonder if that then caused the dead bearing from not sitting flat?

It looked flat as I dismantled. But the damage is definitely on one side which would support what you said.

Could it not be over tightening?

im trying to remember how the stock suspension looks when going together, its been a while.
from memory that spring hat doesnt tighten down to anything? just slides over the shaft?

The cap slides over the shaft, we don't use #7, then 6 (bearing) and 5 (strut top) are screwed onto the shaft, so if the nut (#4) is too tight, i'm wondering if the bearing would be the weakest link.

                Thanks Dylan.
