  • Eos rims on a Passat?

    Hey guys

Im a VW noob and I've recently purchsed a B7 passat and most of the rims are gutter rashed and it has cheap crap tyres that understeer something chronic in the wet (boto?!?!):

I'm going to replace the crapola tyres with michelin PS3's, and I've decided to search for a fresher set of rims rather than spend the $ to attempt to refinish the stock rims.

I've found a like new set of 17" rims from an Eos that look identical to the oem Michigan rims fitted to my passat for sale. I had assumed the eos rims would be narrower with a higher offset being a smaller car, yet after some digging i also noticed the Vicenza style 18" rims that are on the sports passats come fitted to the sports eos.

Can anyone confirm the eos rims and passat rims are identical?

Dont know but my TDI has Michigan 17 x7 1/2 which look like that Have 235 x 45 R17s conti sport 3 self sealing tyres.

    Options were Kansas 18 x 8 with 235 x 40 x18 according to the brochure in 2010

Can have a look at offset in the morning.

Check the back of the rim and it should have all the size/offset details marked on the back of the spokes. You can sometimes use a phone to take a photo while the wheels are still on the car. Worst case just jack the car, remove the rim and get the details there. This is by far the safest way to be 100% sure.

Even though the size (say 18x7.5) may be the same, the offsets vary quite a lot between different models in the VW range. Best to put what you have and what you're looking at into an online tyre/rim fitment calculator - Online Wheel and Tyre Fitment Calculator. Offset, Tyre Stretch and Speedo Error | Will They Fit

This will give you the rolling diameter change and tell you how much more/less poke you're going to end up with. General rule is that you'll want to poke a little more than stock wheels as the OEM rims typically sit well within the guards.

Yes thanks for your suggestions I had emailed the seller to request this information, in the meantime I thought I would post it up here to check with the VW guru's to see if anyone had a definite answer

The seller replied back to state the cast marks on the inside spokes of the wheels is 7.5 +47.

I checked the cast marks on my spare wheel in the boot and lo and behold they match!

So it looks like I answered my own question, I'll arrange to collect the rims today and the new tyres in the next week or so

Good to hear you got it sorted

Best to confirm the sizes/fitment before committing to anything. VW does sometimes use the same rim on a number of cars with different offsets (e.g. Scirocco R / Golf R) so it pays to check.

Yes I had assumed the EOS rims would be narrower in width with a higher offset being a 'class' smaller than the passat, but the 7.5J x 17 H2 ET 47 offset on the EOS cast marks matches what my passat spare rim is in the boot

I'm getting a set of michelin PS3 tyres fitted on Tues.

I was going to get them fitted at Tempe tyres next time I was in Sydney (I reside in newcastle nsw) had heard bob jane are matching tempe's prices so I gave them a call.

My local Bob jane salesperson was very shirty, and scoffed when i explained that tempe could do them for $139 fitted. He said oh what you called around for tyre prices before you called your local tyre shops... I explained that I had done some research on the net, seen them for that price and decided to call my local bob jane as I had heard they were matching their prices. He continued to badmouth tempe how they import tyres and don't offer a local warranty, 6 tyre shops in between newcastle and tempe have gone out of business because of them etc etc

Than said yes I will match their price when he seen they had $139 fitted on their website for 235/35 17" tyres.

I'll clean up the EOS rims this weekend, and put a coat of nanolex wheel sealant on them prior to fitting

Well I picked the rims up on Friday afternoon to replace the oem rims with gutter rashing on 3 rims.

Original owner had rashed the rims on the passat:

They had been used for a month or so according to the owner, and were pretty grubby but no major rashing. Surprisingly the specs matched the passat rims which was unexpected. The seller had $200 ono on them I had $165 in my wallet so offered him $165 and he said yeah ok no worries. Talk about a bargain!

So I spent about 12 hours getting them up to scratch by doing a deep cleanse, clay bar, polish and wax.

                  Started by high pressure cleaning:

This removed most of the muck:

Then scrubbing and use of sonax wheel cleaner:

The next step was to use an old piece of claybar to remove any surface contaminants:

Then a rinse before moving onto paint prep:

Annoyingly I couldnt find my nanolex wheel sealent... Decided to seal the wheels with zymol titanium wax (a durable wax, but not exactly suitable for wheels)

Start by applying it with my hands, the friction by the rubbing motion melts the wax and a small amount goes a long way:

The paint looks crystal clear and had added depth after buffing by hand when removing the wax

Why are the VW caps on these rims and teh rims on the car all scuffed/scratched?!?!

                  EOS rim specs:

                  Passat Rim Specs:

Hopefully the missus doesnt gutter rash these rims once i get the michelin PS3 tyres fitted on Tuesday!!

Probably a tad overboard with all that detailing for some plain jane 17" rims, but once cleaned correctly and with a decent wax they should be able to be kept clean with weekly washes and cleaning with the E-Z rim brush tool

Yeah I was a tad dubious as to why they were so cheap, but the seller just wanted them gone as they were taking up room in his small garage and the new car had arrived

VW group cars are like mechano sets - heaps of interchangeable parts.

I'd suggest 235/45r17 tyres - will look better & make the speedo more accurate

Thats what mines got and the speedo is at least 6 k over at 100kph and so far we havent been able to correct it with a VCDS. Would take tyres that are illegal to get it back to dead right

Hmm AFAIK 235/45 17 on the B7 passat is standard size anyway (that's what I had on my rims and thats what the spare tyre has which appears to have a factory fitted continental tyre to it)

when checking the speedo against the GPS, it was approx 4-5km/h too fast around 100 km/h.

Sure, it doesn't make it dead accurate but 6kph out is better than 10kph out.
