Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Noisy clunking endlinks after fitting KW coilovers?

I was initially happy after install of KW Street Comfort Coilovers to my 2015 Polo GTI BUT started to get clunking from the front suspension and it eventually became unbearable. Took car back to Pedders who did the job and they had no clue.

At the suggestion of BWA (who sold me the KWs) I took the car to Buik Auto (Adelaide Porche specialist/APR agent) and young mechanic quickly identified that it was the endlinks (std VW. The link rods, about 300mm long fit between the coilover mount hole and the ARB), movement in ball type joints (car done only 3,000ks). Took them off, no clunking, refitted them and there has been no clunking since???????????

Anyone else had noisy endlinks after fitting coilovers. Can these endlinks be fitted wrong way around? Why has the noise stopped? Will it start again?

Tried Harding and BWA and there are no aftermarket endlinks for my car if this noise does come back.

Also posted in Polo forum. Looking for answers.

Could Pedders have not torqued up one end of the endlink enough so it worked a bit loose over time?

Thanks but doubt it after they specifically told me they checked the end link bolts when I took it back to Pedders.

Yes I'm happy right now tigger73 but just being pessimistic about the outcome.

Well look on the bright side - at least you know where to get it fixed next time.

Was it clunking on every bump or only noticeable at slow speeds on like full lock?

Almost continuous clunking at all speeds over any minor-major road imperfections. Most noticeable at low speeds, it's a noise that was transmitted up through the body from the front sway bar/endlink joints, drove me nuts! Pedders were useless at diagnosing it and went back on their word that they would do any required height adjustments etc after a month. Ride height had dropped about 6 to 8mm in 4 weeks and car was lower than KW's recommendations, ended up fixing that and making some rebound adjustments myself. After sales service - you pay and then they do not want to know you!

With your just fitted Eibach springs I expect you may notice some minor spring clanking, particularly when eg turning into your driveway?? Had this with my previous Eibach Pro kit/Polo GTI, nothing drastic and something I could live with.

no weird noises at all with the Eibachs, my BC coilovers in my legnum bind at pop/crack sometimes on full lock in the driveway

i'd only go to pedders if all you want to do is a wheel alignment on a regular car or slam a falcodore, i had my own experiences with them 10 years ago. i prefer smaller businesses and not chains

Sometimes just flipping the end links over quietens things down.

The knocking came back!! so I fitted Whiteline adjustables and noise has gone again, hopefully for good this time.

Found that a couple of the VW knuckles/ball joints were locked up and took a bit of force to get them moving again.

Hi Car nut, I've just been quoted $2600 for kW street comfort installed, is that expensive, what's the ride like is it firmer than stock? I've just bought a polo gti. Had any further issues at all with the suspension? Like to know if that's reasonable. Thanks mate

Hi ENERG1, good to see you are looking back at old posts, that's how I have learnt the little I do know.

I'm completely wrapped with the Street Comforts since I sorted out the endlink issue. The car definitely rides better, or is less firm, over our rubbish roads here in Adelaide. Handling is stunning, way better than my previous 2013 Polo GTI on Eibachs. Other members of this forum have fitted the same street comfort coilovers to their Polos with zero noise or issues. I think my oem endlinks were faulty from new and could not handle the lowering.

$2600 seems reasonable PROVIDED the 'fitter' is willing to make adjustments to suit you say 4 weeks after the initial install. The ride height will drop over that period. Don't get Pedders to do the install, rather a VW/Audi/Porche etc independent specialist or similar.
