  • My steelies

Just got them back today after a bit of widening Thought I'll make a thread here for now then have some pics of them on the car when I get that back in my Mk3 thread.

    Before - 15x6 ET38

    After - 15x8 ET25 and ET14, powdercoated satin black.

Hopefully I'll have tyres on by the end of the week, and not far down I'll have the car back from the smash repairs.
    Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
    Present: Mk3 Golf variant.

Original wheels were Mk4 steelies, from the 1.6L models I think. They JUST fit over the VR6 288mm rotors and calipers! I was thinking either these or the New Beetle 16" steelies but decided on Mk4 items as I liked their design better.

Peter works quick! I was surprised to receive his phone call during class yesterday at Uni haha.

Thanks for the comments Unfortunately the guys at the smash repairs love taking their time so pics of them on the car won't be possible for a while

Alex, I'll be using 195/50R15 tyres on them so I'd imagine there'd be some decent stretch, nothing mad though! Dom, 9" in the rear is too hardcore for me!

It costs $75/each for new barrels, $85/each for removing the original centres out and fixing them back onto the new barrels, and $40/each for powdercoating. This included sandblasting and other prep work. Fantastic price for the powdercoating finish, but of course, you get what you pay for - the powdercoat wasn't as thick as I would have imagined, and a spot wasn't prepped right before the powdercoating so it showed up in the finish, but it's all minor. All up, it was a smidge less than $900 including the wheels itself and hubcaps

And yeah, it was an abandoned BBS RS that was lying around a shop/garage. I offered to buy it and the guy was kinda dumbfounded haha. He asked for $20

Ray, where did your $40 quote come from? I cleaned my VR stockies again today and I keep feeling sooo dissapointed after cleaning them because they've got areas where paint has come off and they're still grubby in some nooks/crannies, so a re-spray is becoming more of a priority!

I went to Peter @ OZwheels. He is based in St Marys, just off the Great Western Highway. Phone number is (02) 96237179. He doesn't do the powdercoating though; he sends them out somewhere else. I didn't ask him who though.

The price at $40/each wheel was only for the powdercoating. You gotta factor in the cost in prepping the wheels before powdercoating (has to be blasted to bare metal for maximum adhesion).
