Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Lowering options for Mk5 GTI - coilovers or h&r springs?

    Hi guys,

I'm looking to lower my Mk5 GTI. First I looked at JOM coilovers as suggested by a forum member. I spoke to the guys at VW Centre here in Canberra and they recommend springs and new shocks. They reckon 'cheap' coilovers don't last long so wiring a year or so I will have to chuck them out and replace. So I thought maybe I will go with springs as I've seen some photos of pretty decent drops with springs.

I've looked at this thread (H&R Suspension Picture Thread - VW GTI Forum / VW Rabbit Forum / VW R32 Forum / VW Golf Forum - Golfmkv.com) and I've seen so many photos of golfs with either Sport, Supersport or Race H&R springs but they all look pretty much the same, apparently Race give the biggest drop. I can get them from ECS sport (403 Forbidden) for around $360 delivered.

What is your opinion on these race springs, do they fit the golf mk5 gti 2007? Or hould I get supersports? Is there much difference between the two? Any of you guys have them fitted? Any photos?

Any help is much appreciated as there is so much information out there and everyone is saying a different thing, its just so hard to decide.

So I've done my research and I decided to order h&r super sports and bilstein sports shocks. (403 Forbidden) is there anything else I should be replacing when I replace these two?

Can someone confirm that this kit will fit my 2007 Gti MK5.

    Thanks guys
