  • Track Day Semi Slicks

    I've been mucking around with semi slicks and thought I would share findings

    I've used Toyo R888, Nitto NT01 and Dunlop 03G (hard)
    (I've now also got my hands on a set of Hankook Z221 - medium)

    Most people are aware that Toyo and Nitto come from the same factory
    These tyres are a cheap way to get more grip and save your street tyres from a track hiding
    The extra grip comes from being soft and semi slick - more rubber on the road
    One benefit is that you can get ont he throttle earlier, the inside front wheel is less likely to spin (to a point)
    At the end of the day there are 3 things to note about these tyres
    -Pretty soft, don't expect them to last too long
    -Not going to break lap records due to not enough grip, but better than street tyres
    -Pretty sensitive to tyre pressure and heat
    You want these tyres to have 23~24 PSI when stone cold,
    when coming in from the track check the hot PSI and reduce to 30~31 PSI as needed
    When these tyres are 32+ PSI hot and tread is over 60 deg they get pretty slippery

    The Dunlop 03G have been simply awesome
    (mine were second hand, 17k on the road and 4 track days)
    Not very sensitive to PSI or temperature (coming in at 65~68 deg)
    They stuck well, awesome braking and turned in on request without understeer

    The bottom line is that cheap/used quality semi slicks are a better buy than new/cheap semi slicks

    Sounds like you're having a blast.

    The Dunlops have generally received positive feedback, so it's good that they're working well for you.
