Toyo R1R Performance tyres - Reviews / Opinions Wanted

apologies if these questions have already been asked. i searched toyo r1r which brought up loads of results for toyo; i then searched r1r which brought up nothing. here goes:

has anyone had first hand experience of this tyre. i have searched reviews (as shown below) which generally were in favour of them apart from one which said they were next inline after Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 (which i was considering anyway).

i want them for road and track use but i hardly cover any k's so longevity or road performance is not totally essential although i don't want them to be dangerous on the road. that said they get favourable reviews in the wet so should perform ok.

i'm looking at these as an alternative to having 2 sets of wheels. i don't have the space, time or inclination to swap wheels for each track day. the tread pattern looks like it might be possible to rotate these without having to swap the tyre on the rim (machine; i'm expecting you to chime in here..... if you haven't already )

i'm pretty keen to get a set of 4 before the next hl run out but it will depend on funds / time. so far i have been quoted $310 fitted per corner from tyre power but hoping to get them down a bit if possible. if i don't get them on i will give my current tyres one more run out with the new suspension set up and then go for new tyres. that way i can compare apples with apples to provide a better review for anyone else considering them.

depending what size you are after, if it is 225 40 18, BEWARE it only comes in load rating of 88. Audi A3/S3 & Golf Mk5/6/7 require min load rating of 92 for roadworthy purposes.

I currently use Kumho KU36, 225 40 18 in the correct legal load rating of 92. The R1R is in the same class as Kumho KU36, Advan Neova AD08 (again load is only 88 rated), etc... you can check out at Tirerack youtube clip:

thanks mate, a very good point and one i had overlooked. these vag motors must be on the porky side of the load rating, i had read about sti's using the r1r's and wrongly assumed they would be ok for the s3.

i'm currently looking at the Kumho KU36, how do you rate them and do you mind me asking where you got them from please?

Iv had KU36s on 2 previous cars and loved them! for the price htey performan extremely well!

Frazza has some Hancocks he babbles on about that are awesome, cant remember the name of them though

I'm running 225/45/17 Hankooks RS3's as they were only a few bucks more than KU36's and the track guys rave on about them, (warm up quicker and don't overheat as quickly). These have the 200 treadwear rating, although they make a 140 treadwear version -not sure why, or whether you can get them over here.
My opinion (as a road tyre) is that they stick like glue when warm, aren't too harsh or noisy (so far) and turn in is great (WALK kit also helps). I'm comparing these to Michy PS3's that used to be on there.
In colder weather (winter) they are good, comparable to PS3's, but they come alive with some heat. I try to get some heat in them on the street by cornering a little harder and using the brakes more (rather than coasting/engine braking) to get some heat radiating through to tyres.

Ku36's really are **** tyre compared to anything else in the 'same' class. R1R's are a great tyre. Offers good long lasting grip, even when used on the track.

I ran R1R's back in the UK and they were stellar in the wet compared to R888's.

Just watch out for the wide shoulder on them, it's like running a 10mm wider tyre for fitment purposes.

KU36s can be had for under $202/tire fitted. I got them for $160 when I brought them.

Toyo R1R (in the same size, from the shop) are $414/tire fitted. Richard been quoted $320.

is the R1R twice the tire of the KU36?

i'm really considering the ku36 now, best price so far is $265 fitted from tyrepower. where was the $202 from mate?

thanks mate, i'll keep that in mind. the 88 load rating has pretty much cancelled these out though. things like that wouldn't normally bother me but after 2 defects in 12 months i'm pulling my head in a bit...

Option 1 want $308 a corner.

so far its tyrepower then, i just have to check that they are quoting the right model and size as its far cheaper than all other suppliers...
