  • R36 with Omanyts 19" replicas 255/35R19 ContiSport 5P - They feel unreal!

I just got 3.5 years and 37,000 Kms out of a set of factory 235/40R18 Contisport 3's on factory rims.

    I took the opportunity to upgrade to 19" x 8.5" ET45 Omanyts replicas with 255/35 Contisport 5P's

The 255/35R19 feels unreal on the road! Not as hard as I thought they might be too, and they are quieter than my old Conti 3s.
I have much better feel for whats going on and the car feels more planted. I love it!

I have the adjustable DCC suspension and even on sport they do feel firm but not harsh which was really surprising.

They look really great too and fill out the wheel arch very nicely.

    Before with factory 18"s

I still cant believe the difference in noise and feel with these compared to the Conti 3's.
BTW what offset are your rims? I had a tiny rub in the rear over a speed hump with a full boot and I can see it on the wheel shroud. Nothing to worry about, just interested as St George Tyres said I can get the offset machined a bit higher if I need it.

                A 255/35 R19 tyre will have a higher sidewall height (255 x 35% = 89 mm) than a 235/35 R19 tyre (235 x 35% = 82 mm), hence the increase in compliance.

In addition, the tread depth will be at its greatest when the tyres are new, which also contributes to the feeling of increased compliance, but this will diminish as the tyre wears down. Also, the compound tends to harden with age, so the tyre is softest when new.

To put it in a bit of perspective, that's usually the experience of most (but not all) people when replacing a set of old or worn out tyres with a brand new set.

Actually the original tyres were 235/40R18 which is 94mm sidewall height (technically more compliant), but your probably right about the extra tread depth on new tyres giving better compliance. Not forgetting it is also a totally different and softer compound with totally different side wall construction and different tread pattern also. They also officially quote them as being quieter than the old Conti 3 and also have a 5P version designated RO1 which is 9dB quieter. (dont think I got the RO1 but I havent checked)

                    St George Tyres, good guys.
I think they are from China from this factory in the link below. (finish is good, how they stand up to wear and tear, break dust etc remains to be seen) I found a couple different sources on Ali Baba, one with the machined lip and the one without like my replica. I dont miss the machines lip and I think having the spoke go to the edge makes them look bigger.

                        Looks good mate!
I'm sure a few mods will help bring further passion towards your R36. Must say that I do love those number plates

Might be worth looking into getting some lowering springs for a more sportier look without sacrificing ride comfort of the Passat. You can pick up some reputable H&R Sport Comfort Springs for $300 delivered, happy to send you photos if interested as I know they will complement the look of the 19's.

The St George Tyre Guys had all the stick on logo's for different cars makes.

                          Thanks!

I can't lower it anymore it already scrapes the front spoiler on some driveways, and I need the clearance to prevent tyre rubbing. 255 is a lot wider than 235 and right at the limit of what would rub on the front guard.

It also has the electronic DCC adjustable shocks so Im not sure they would work well with after-market springs. As it is, I like the compromise between a low-rider harsh ride and comfort.

The bigger wheels/tyres also fill out the guards a bit better than the factory anyway so I think it's the best overall compromise for me without destroying comfort.

You must be going in and out of some nasty driveways if it scrapes at the height it is at the moment. A mate of mine ran 20" ADV.1 Trackspec wheels mate with H&R lowering springs on his R36, which it didn't rub at all from what he told me. Who said aftermarket springs would not work well with DCC? Might need some of the guys with H&R lowering springs on their R36 to chime in on this thread. Definitely look into them mate for a more "fatter" look with the 19's, IMHO. Like I said, H&R Sport Comfort Springs will not effect the ride and comfort. Just remember its only a 20mm drop! I know of a set for sale in the classifieds section BRAND NEW in the box if interested in going through with my idea.

                            Would be perfect

Hi Robbie, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I have to cater to everyday driving and the "ramming speed" my wife takes to speed humps and driveways..... she doesnt understand you're supposed to slow down.

Dropping another 20mm doesnt sound like much, but the R36 is already dropped 25mm from the factory compared to the Passat, and dropping another 20mm with the increased rolling diameter (8mm) of 19's with 255 rubber would give zero clearance to the outside of the wheel arch.. It's just not the look or hassle I want or need.. I could see me having to go to the panel beater every 2 weeks to get the guards straightened.

Springs and shocks are matched for compression and rebound control. You cant just go changing stuff willy nilly without effecting comfort, handling and safety. Unless the springs are designed for adjustable shocks I doubt they would work as well as the factory springs anyway.

Perfect for you maybe, but it's perfect for me as is.

                              Cheers
