  • Tyre Choice for MK5 GTI Golf

    Hi all,

Its time to upgrade my tyres. I currently have bridgestone potenzas but dont think I will be going back to them.

I have been doing my research but I m just unsure on what to go for. These are my options (in Melbourne):

I am after a 225/45/R17 (They are on stock gti wheels).

    - Falken 452: $200 a tyre
    - Pirelli P7 Cinturato: $199 a tyre
    - Continental MC5: $185 a tyre
    - Michelin Pilot Sport 3: $239 a tyre
    - Kumho Ku31: $189 a tyre

I do alot of highway driving. I dont need the best tyre but I still want something decent.

Does anyone have any experiences with these tyres?

    Thanks
    Dan

I have Kumho Ku31's and have found them great value for money.
Will definitely get them again when the time comes.

on Friday I am getting Pirelli P Zero Nero's put on.
Another mate has had them for a month and loves them. $180 each

I did some research on them but it seems as though they are a very noisy tyre.

Price I got for them down here in Melbourne was $213 each

I appreciate this is MKV however when I bought aome Polo wheels off Stuwey he told me he hated the P Zero Neros on his Polo 9N and they could not wear out quick enough.

Have used KU31 on my now departed HSV - great bang for buck but there is better out there.

Get a price on Bridgestone Adrenalins and if it is in the range or close buy them (I have the originals on an A3 and they are terrific and the latest are by all accounts even better).

As the prices you were quoted are broadly similar, I would mainly consider the Michelin Pilot Sport 3 (more grip) or the Pirelli P7 Cinturato (more durable) depending on your needs.

by tPS3 if you can afford the extra spend. Otherwise I'd personally take a punt on the Conti.

I've had the KU31 & it was good value but very noisy at <50% tread depth.

I have a few mates that swear by the FK452 but they get them a lot cheaper than that.

              Beauty of the PS3, P7 & MC5 is that they're assymetric & can be x-rotated.

I have Falken tyres. They are imported from Indo. I like them a lot and aren't too loud. I do have a diesel so that may overpower the road noise.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I will most likely going with the P7 or Falken tyre. Has anyone had experience with the pirelli p7??

I'd pick the Conti before the other 2. The Falken is way overpriced.

The Pirelli has had a few good reports from members on this forum.

I am running P7 Cinturato's 225/45 17 on stock GTD wheels and I love them. Feel good at the speeds I drive at, good in the wet unless you're mad of course, very quiet in my perception even at highway speeds. I got mine from my dealer for $869 fitted, balanced and 4 wheel align. Happy as a clam! If interested I put a quick review up on tyrereviews recently.... see link. Good luck with the search.

Over a year ago (I think) i did lots of research. I went for Michelin PS3 and they are the best I've had. I chose 235//35/17. Superb wet or dry. Great wearing, great handling. No experience with the Pirelli. Keep us updated with what you purchased...this will help fellow searches in future!

Thanks for all your reviews guys. It's helping alot. I think for price, the Pirelli P7 might be the way to go. Happy to give them a go and see how they are. I will most likely be getting them next week so I will keep this thread updated on what I end up with and my thoughts!!
