  • Rounded wheel bolt

So last weekend after going to get new tyres put on my wheels, one of my twenty wheels bolts decided to be stuck fast, not sure if its 100% rooted/threaded/whatever or not at this point. Being clever and all, one of my friends popped round with a breaker bar and we managed to almost completely round this bolt after only 2 goes at it

Anybody know how I can get this thing off? Im guessing I'll have to take it to a tyre shop/mechanic and get it drilled out though I already took it to a Bob Janes and they told me they couldn't help.

Also, anyone know where I can pick up a new set of bolts? Preferably some nicer looking ones.

    Thanks guys.
    Dan!

Is it a standard 17mm head bolt?

You could get someone who's handy with a welder to attach another nut to the end of it and try again.

ive got some bolts, how many do you need?. how did you round off a wheel bolt?? i suspect you must of had a incorrect size socket? will be a really hard job to get that off. i take it its a alloy wheel so its deep in the rim? if it was a steel rim then you would of had more chance. theres a company called "tread tech" they are mobile and might be able to help

Getting new bolts is the least of your worries - what a pain in the...
(I'm surprised the bolts have rounded off - that should not happen)
Like you I assume the bolt has to be drilled out, arggg

Did the tyre shop put your wheels back on using the air gun?
Bob Jane once did that to my Mazda, they were so tight that I could not undo them with a T brace, the socket head sheared off!
I now use a different tyre shop, I noticed they quickly/lightly whack all the wheels bolts in with the air gun and then torque them all with a conventional torque wrench - happy with that approach

i have some sockets for undoing rounded bolts. Happy to lend them to you. I'll pick the one to fit a std 17mm bolt. I live in Narangba and work at the airport. I am going to Mansfield after work tomorrow arvo, about 3 o'clock. PM me for my number if you want it.

The sockets Gav has will do the trick. I had a bolt seize once, I used a breaker bar and actually bent my Sidchrome ratchet. Let the tyre down and called RACQ. They used an impact socket which was hammered over the nut. Came off quick, took a while to get the bolt out of the socket however.

I've had this happen to a car in the past. Local tyre shop was able to get it off by air-chiselling the edge of the bolt on an angle that turned it counter clockwise. Was a bit scary watching this, but it worked fine.

Butchers. A decent tyre shop would have a set of Ease out sockets that grip in an anti clockwise direction and simply undo a rounded nut. If a guy in a place like Tennant Creek had one why wouldnt a big busy tyre shop in a city.

I had an 84 Telstar that had fine thread studs and a tyre shop did them up too tight Broke 3 getting them off and cost me a new set and a front wheel bearing as it gets damaged when removing hub to replace studs.

                      Was no other way apparently

SO, went to two tyre shops and finally called thread tech. Here's the results

BIG shout out to these guys! Had to use a massive ease out socket with a breaker bar and about 3 long pipes on it for leverage haha
