  • Rear knocking/creaking

    Hi guys

Recently I had my car in for some mechanical work so was without my car for about a week or so. Upon picking it up I swear it now creaks slightly or rattles (perhaps knocking) from the rear when driving (rear suspension?).

It could be that it was always there and after driving another car for the week, coming back to mine it then stood out and I had never observed it before but in any case, is there a way I can check everything is ok? Can I go to a suspension specialist for a check up basically?

It's a stock MKV has done about 65k KM.

    Thanks guys

Sounds like something that I had in my 6R but i am not sure how similar the design of the mk5 golf and the 6r polo is however does it come from both sides or just one? When i was looking for the noise in mine, I found it helpful to have the seats down (or actually removed) to ascertain where the knock was coming from. As I could swear it was coming from over my left shoulder (rear passenger side) but with the rear seats actually removed, it was clear that it was actually coming from the rear drivers side. Did any of this 'mechanical work' invovle suspension work?
My Car(s): 2011 6R TSI Comfortline (Pepper Silver),
If you're in need of any 6n1 parts, odds are that I am going to have them (dismantling 2 at the moment)

I had the same issue with my MKVI GTD, the dealer I used to work for said it was "normal"..
But when I replaced the suspension I didn't have an issue.
My new R doesn't have the issue though, so it could be luck of the draw.

          Re: Rear knocking/creaking

Definitely something wierd in my case. Took it to dealer last week JUST to try and track it down. When tech came for drive he thought maybe chassis-flex, because actually more noticeable at low speed over uneven ground! Pulled it all apart (up to & including drivers seat) but still no wiser. Taking it back Friday for VW "expert" who's coming to dealership to check it. Fingers (&toes) crossed!

Keep us informed. Really interested to know what they find. Chassis flex isn't exactly stoppable is it??

Might be handbrake catching , or worn bushes
Front creaking is generally the subframe or upper strut mounts worn.

Run over the rear of the car with a torque wrench- on a hoist - and give everything a good proper tighten with the suspension static ( car sitting flat)

                Re: Rear knocking/creaking

Already had frt strut mts and rear swaybar bushes replaced. Everything else seems good, although have RSB waiting to be fitted. Dealer techs (after pulling it apart) think it could be something between body shell and floor under drivers seat. Will (hopefully) know Friday after VW "expert" has had a look

                  Re: Rear knocking/creaking

Latest on my noise saga - VW "expert" had a look and after being unable to find the noise has laid the blame on modded springs/lowering causing more body flex which is creating the noise. As I explained to dealer service manager, the noise has been there from new (before any mods done) but dealers and VWA have been too slack/uninterested to do anything about it! On the plus side, they haven't charged me for anything and (touch wood) haven't noticed the noise since I got the car back so maybe something they've fiddled with/tightened has fixed it anyway.

Just noticed this old thread and thought worthwhile updating. The noise came back bad as ever, and since the bad publicity VWA got re DSG failures they strangely became interested in trying to resolve it again (that and new Service Manager at dealership who's obviously more customer focused).
Firstly tried putting some special wax in body cavity which helped for a while, but still came back. Tig is in all this week for them to basically entirely strip the interior and get panelbeaters to hopefully find and fix whatever's making the noise. Fingers crossed

                      Success
After apparently stripping interior so panelbeater could get at body shell to "widen" the gap between inner and outer skin where touching when body flexed, looks like noise is finally gone!
Only taken almost 3 years, but I guess perserverence pays off...
And kudos to my dealer service manager for standing up to VWA and insisting that mods, while possibly making it more noticeable due to stiffer suspension, were not the cause of problem
