Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • New rims but scrape on calipers....

just bought some custom rims from a great bloke, unfortuantly the rims will scrape on the calipers and i was wondering if there was any other way of clearing them, (only the front), without using spacers obviously, at the moment they have very little clearance like 2mm, but if i need to change the pads they will definetly scrape.... :'( any solutions????
On his GTi he had no clearance, mines a mk5 FSI pretty stock
    P.s. new dubber

What sort of wheels are we talking about?
Have seen guys taking a mm or two of material off the caliper, but its not something you just want to muck around with

Obviously the wrong offset or the wrong rim diameter . You do realise spacers are illegal on the road.
      Perhaps not a good buy.

OP, you say they scrape in one sentence and then there's 2mm clearance mentioned in another? Will the wheel rotate when bolted up or not?

Take them back and buy some with proper offset etc They are obviously not the correct ones for that car.

Grinding calipers may come back to bite you if anything breaks

Offset isnt the factor that decides if a wheel will clear or not, its the design of the wheel

But wrong offset for that design

Why not get a new set of pads (you'll need them sometime) and confirm the clearance (or lack, thereof) before returning the rims?
