Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Brake upgrade for MKV TDI help...

Hey guys didn't know whether to post here or performance?? More related to suspension so here I am

I'm looking at pricing for a brake upgrade to go with 18" wheels I will be purchasing around Xmas.

I would love to get a nice r32, R or scirocco brake setup but looking at the pricing (around 1k front and rear) iv been thing about just going GTI.

Is it worth just going the GTI setup or should I just save for a lifetime and get the nice big R brakes?

What size are the standard golf mkv's rotors?

    Worth slotted rotors?

    Good pads?

What is the max rotor size that GTI calipers can fit?

    Thanks lhennessy

You would see that in my opinion in terms of braking power the GTi setup is just as good as the Golf R. If you're truly craving superior stopping power I'd be saving up for something with 4 piston calipers - thats where you'll find more braking improvement rather than just going to the biggest rotors possible. I guess you just need to ask yourself honestly why you need the brake upgrade. Is it for performance or just looks?

nice to see someone honest - in that case then the R brakes are the best value in terms of looks. Hey you can always buy those Brembo plastic covers off ebay that you silicon over your calipers.
