215/35/18 or 225/40/18 on a 9.5 Inch Rim - Appearance Only

Hi guys i'm after your opinion;

Which LOOKS best a 215/35/18 or 225/40/18 tyre on a 9.5 inch rim. I know the stretch thing is an age old debate and i know i'm contradicting myself saying i like my performance but i also like the looks too.

In this case i'm only after your opinions on which looks best. I tried some wheels on last week and i can't decide on the tyre size so hope you can help. i think i'm leaning towards the 225/40/18 as the 35 just looks like a too small wall size.

I'd say in between the two - I'm all for stretch, but I think the profile on the 35 is just too low!

And if you haven't decided on wheels then you need Bentley's or Helios or something...those wheels look ricey as!

Depends how low you are gonna go. I'd try to match rolling diameter with stock so your speedo stays as accurate as possible. Only stretch if you have to fit it under guards.

I personally like sidewall as extremely low profile tyres remind me of 20s on Commodores.

If roadworthiness and performance matters, then 225/40 R18 92Y XL tyres on 8.0 J x 18 wheels.

Otherwise, go with 215/35 R18 tyres if your car is mainly a cruiser. Should go down pretty well with the stretch brigade.

based on the wheels only photo comparison I liked the 215/35...

until I saw them on the car, imo just doesn't quite look right, too small rolling diameter.

Since you were able to test fit the wheels and tyres together, it'll be easy for you to see what tyre size you need to go. If you can still run 225/40 without rubbing, then go for that. Tyre stretching isn't about going as mental as you can; as long as you can clear your guards/suspension, then that's all you really need to run. Going further means you're gonna have to run lower to achieve the look you want. The pic of your car with 215/35R18 tyres on, is that the height you'll be running at all the time? Then I would suggest the 225/40 so it fills out the wheel gap.

Also, there's 215/40R18 and 225/35R18 available that you could run. I personally have 18x10s on the rear of my 8L with 215/40R18. I decided to go for that tyre cos I needed enough stretch to achieve this:



Otherwise I would've went for 225/35 or 235/35.

What about legality? I seriously doubt the 215/35R18 is rated high enough for your car (the ones I found only had an 84 load rating)

Why those two sizes, if your car isn't slammed stick to a 40 profile otherwise u will have awkward wheel gap.
Don't stretch tyres for the sake of it, do it to suit the fitment on your car.
Test fit the wheels and decide what you need for clearance.

Legality went out the window with 9.5" wide wheels.

I think i had already decided to go with the 40 profile and now i've made my mind up. i might check the rolling radius out of curiosity

i know what you mean mate but really struggling to find the size i want in 5x100. thinking of going with the gold like below;

i ran 235/40/18 on 9.5: rims on my S3, they looked great, and as mine were the Goodyear Asymmetric 2s the rim protector made them look another 10mm+ wider.
