Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Back wheel squeak

My girl has a VW Golf 105TDi stationwagon with DSG, and suddenly a really loud squeak has started to appear of the right back wheel. This sound is only appearing in sharp turns. The sound is highest when turning to the left, but you can hear it as well when turning right.
I took of the wheel today, and tried to untight the break protector (the metal disc) as I thought this could be the metal squeaking sound, but that didn't change anything.

Do you know what this could be, and if it's easy to self repair?

    Cheers!

It does sound like the brake backing plate is making contact with the disk somewhere.

I have found this on the rear of my Octavia several times. It is a weird problem because it goes away by itself sometimes - but basically if its ever really bad I just bend the backing plate away a bit by pushing on it with a big screwdriver

I had a simliar problem in my POLO GTI. The left corner had a really irritating squeak/rattle. At first I was convinced that it was one of the trim pieces in the back. But the culprit ended up being the rear left shock absorber mount (see image). I tightened the strut top bolt, reinstalled, and viola! no more squeak.

      Hope this helps
