Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Protocol when rims are replaced.

Just replaced my Golf R rep rims today with some Oz racing rims for my Mk6 GTi and noticed when I got home that the Tyre / Wheel shop had replaced the VW locknut and bolts with a new set of bolts that apparently came with the new rims and did not give me back the old set of bolts and locknut either. (They were closing at 12pm today and my car was one of the last to leave so I didn't have much time to query this.)

Was wondering if anyone else has had this experience and should they have given me back my original set of bolts?

    Thanks

Did you trade in your wheels? If you did they could justify keeping them. If not, and you were charged for new bolts, they are your property.

Perhaps the OZ rims required bolts that have a different taper where they seat in the rim?

when I swapped to the Momo rims I needed tapered bolts instead of the standard VW ball seat bolts (and hub-centric rings). Apparently this is common with many of the aftermarket rims (except many of the VW replica rims and some like VMR, use the original bolts).

the Tyre fitter handed back the original bolts, (I would have insisted any way). You also need to keep a set of original bolts next to your spare, as you dont want to use different bolts if you need to use your spare.

No, I didn't trade in my wheels, will have to give them a visit on Monday.

That is the reason I was thinking that I needed my old bolts back as my space saver wheel probably needs the old bolts. The new wheels did needed the new tapered bolts but I thought it was a bit cheeky to keep my original bolts (I am presuming the new wheels came the new bolts or the tyre fitter may have kept them as a trade! )

Always hard to guess, when I was looking around for rims, bolts weren't included. As I sourced by rims separately to the tires, the tire fitter also supplied the new bolts for which I paid extra, hence I got my old bolts back. In fact one discount tire place wouldn't even supply the bolts !.

So were you charged for the new bolts ? ..... but I can imagine a few of the excuses, yes we kept your old bolts because that was factored into what we charged you etc etc etc.

I will soon find out the story tomorrow. No, I wasn't charged for the bolts, I should have asked upfront I guess (however thought they would be using my existing bolts).

All good - my bolts were in the fourth box (For some reason I only checked 3 out of the 4 boxes containing my original rims.

Apparently the Oz racing rims come supplied with their own bolts and separate socket too!

                  Thanks to all that replied!
