Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • How much are these BBS RC041s worth?

    Hi all,

Apologies for asking a question like this in one of my first threads, I hope I'm not being rude.

I have a set of BBS RC041 that I bought to refurb and put on my mates S2000. They are 17x8.5+35, 17x9.5+35 in 5x114.3. They are structurally in good condition with no rash or damage, and have all centre caps etc. The clearcoat is starting to peel around the bolt holes in the polished lip and while the silver/gray paint in the centre is in reasonable condition, its a pretty ugly colour and they just look a bit old in general so would suit a respray/polish/new centre cap stickers.

Approximately how much would these be worth as is and refurbed? Just wondering if I got a decent deal on them really as I don't know much about the market for BBS wheels.

They look like this (but 10 years older ):

bit hard to answer on a forum that doesnt run that stud pattern.
Jap wheels tend to sell a lot cheaper then nice 5x100/5x112 wheels.

btw, arent they 5x120 wheels? and the car is 5x114.3...?

refurb... depends on what you do, quality of work, finish etc. too many variations

Wheels like that have a small market. No one wants to pay $$$ for older style wheels unless they're of cult status (I'm thinking along the lines of BBS RS, AC Schnitzer Type II, SSR Mk I/II/III etc) and unfortunately I wouldn't classify the 2-piece RC as that. Don't get me wrong, I think they look great and if I had a Mk2 Supra I'd probably consider this set, but I think the rest of the Aussie market might not think that way.

Without seeing pics and just gathering from your description, I personally wouldn't pay more than $600 for them. Old wheels more often than not have slight buckles that are hard to see but are obvious once put on a wheel balance machine. Refurb would be $800-$1k depending on who you take it to; ~$500 for polish, ~$250 for paint/powdercoat, as well as labour costs, more costs added on if there are buckles. Add ~$100 for new genuine caps.

Ah righto, I thought about as much. I was just planning to paint or powdercoat the whole thing black and stick some of those fake BBS centrecap stickers on the centres for a total cost of around $250. The wheels cost me $400.
