Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Which wheels? Decisions, decisions, decisions!

Has anyone got any advice/opinions on what wheels I should throw on my mk1? I want my golf slammed to the floor and on 13's, was thinking some deep dish 13x7's, but how much arch work will be needed? Plus I want stretch look for the tyres but don't want to spend a million $'s!

What sizes should I be looking at?

    Thanks in advance guys!

stretching tyres don't cost any more then normal unless you get weird sizes.
if you want 7s you need to work out your offset. width alone means nothing...

Then once you have the offset, im sure some of the mk1 guys could tell you what size tyres you will need to clear guards etc

ET-7 is the offset on the wheels I've been looking at. Unsure of the arch work required to get them to fit. I'm going to be getting coilovers that lower 120mm and I was hoping to run them as low as they will go with those wheels on.

7" with -7 offset is about 20mm more poke than a normal fitment 15" which is about -28.

I'd imagine without some guard work your not going to get them on and that low as the guards don't have the width required.

I run 7" -28 with a 10mm spacer on rear and (ie. -1 and it's 'close' to the guard when low.

But I could be proven wrong.

Probably, I was not really using et, more simply the measurement from centre. I was of the understanding towards the outer lip was negative and the inner positive?

All the same, the wheels are et28 with a 10mm spacer to et18 then I'd assume based on the above.

Sorry of I have confused anyone.

Offsets always confuse me! Im going to get them ordered I think and just make them fit! Any ideas on tyre size and availability for that stretched look? The 14x6's I've got for sale at the moment are a nightmare to get small tyres for here, in Europe no problem! Stupid Euro sizes!
