Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Cleaning wheels with a machined face?

    Need/want to clean these up.

They're a machine finish (un-pimp the auto), and forged (not relevant here, but I like the word).

I can google til I'm blue, but some VWW experience would be goood.

I reckon they'd have a clear coat on them. Normal polish should bring them up. Metal polish would only be good if you stripped them and got them professionally machined polished! (which is what I would be doing )

Haha, come on don't hate, they're going to a good cause.

Yeah these ones aren't mirror (I know you're not under that impression anyway) sort of a slight cloudy finish bathroom mirror after a shower kind, and yeah seems like there's a clear coat on there there's that slight laminated feeling to the surface.

I don't want to refurnish them if I can help it as not only am I a POV student, they're pretty mint. The marks down the very bottom of the pic (OP) on the edge are about as bad as they get and some of that is just dirt.

Clean them with a acid free wheel cleaner (have heard great things about P21S wheel gel, car care products stock it) then polish with whatever you would normally use on your car.

so it will probably have a clearcoat, like your a8s... which i can see have some of the normal 'white worm' happening.

id be using normal body paint/polish if they have clear... but im not expert! like what wolfgang said
unless u want to strip them back and full/proper polish, then ud need a metal polish... but i dont think u should be going that extreme...

Ok next time I'm procrastinating I'll give them a bath, claybar, and a wax. See if that makes them shine. (Does that mean I have to clean the filthy car too?)

P21S wheel gel is a good product but very expensive.

I've now moved over to Wolfe Decon duster.

IMO it works better with brake dust and like i said it's sooooo much cheaper.

Just spray it on and let it sit for 5-10min if they are really bad after about 5 min grab a wheels brush and aggitate, then proceed to pressure wash off.

Is there any scratches in the clear coat of these wheels? If so they may require a slight cut and polish but otherwise just a good clay bar and a wax will do, then put a good wheel sealant on them.

Ok I just had a crack at one of them with some 'heavy duty' car wash, rinse, claybar, wipe, turtle wax (detail nerds don't judge it's all I've got at the moment.)

Will post a pic soon, but really need an SLR to pick up the imperfections.
