  • stock Bridgestone tyres on GTI with 17" Denvers

I have a 10 month old GTI with 27000 kilometres on it. This has just started making a load roaring/whiiring sort of noise at various speeds. Took it back to the dealer and went for a drive. They told me it was tyre noise due to feathering and that there was nothing they could do about it but fit new tyres at my expense.

I would have thought I would get more than 27000 kilometres out of a set of factory fit tyres and if not that they would have been covered under warranty as the car is less than a year old.

What do others think and has anyone else had the same issue? If so what was the resolution?

    Thanks Bam

Have the tyres been checked for balance, toe and camber?

LOL... 27000km on a set of tyres and your think its a warranty problem?
Have you read your manual about what's covered/not covered by warranty?

I just thought 27000km was a bit short. I have other cars and they lasted up to 100,000km.

Most 225/45 R17 road tyres tend to be peformance orientated (ride comfort, noise, wear and rolling resistance aren't the main priority for these sort of tyres) so anything from 20k to 50k would be the norm.

Have the tyres been regularly rotated and checked for pressures?

Feathering commonly occurs on the outer or inner edge of tyres due to (but not limited to):
            incorrect pressures
            incorrect alignment
            incorrect camber
            hard cornering
bad tyre batch (fairly rare from a top tier brand)

So whilst I wouldn't be happy with 27,000km, it's hardly a warranty issue, but more of a maintenance issue.
There's no way in hell that a car such as a GTI, and any tyre "worthy" of being fitted to a GTI, will last 100,000km though. Maybe if you lived and worked on a freeway and never drove spiritedly, but yeah. With proper maintenance and a combination of city/highway and normal/spirited driving in a GTI, you would do well to get 50,000km...

My CSC2's were down to the wear indicators at 40,000 on my Polo GTI with Stage 1.
The wear on the front and rear was even due to being rotated regularly, and I also had good even wear across the tyres due to keeping an eye on pressures and alignment etc.

I hope the Bridgestone RE050's on my R don't last that long though... lol :/

The Bridgestones are that bad, at least they are quiet

I heard the Goodyear Eagle F1 (your favourite) has poor wear though

I don't find my Bridgestones particularly quiet... but I haven't had anything else on the R yet. They are definitely louder than the CSC2's which were originally on my MKV (measured via SPL Meter)

Your other comment is true though, the F1 Asymmetric doesn't have the best wear. But I mean, have a look at how well it scores in the other parts.

In any case, it has been superseeded by the Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 2 which has taken a tyre which was STILL winning most of the comparision reviews that it was in, and created a tyre which is currently the undisputed king of tyres. I've not yet to see a review where it HASNT taken the top spot, let alone had anything bad to say about it. It is even dominent vs Bridgestone and Continental's latest high performance tyres.

Michelin's PS3 has also been outclassed by the Asy 2's. So that'd definitely be my pick as soon as the Bridgestones wear out

Granted, the Goodyear Eagle F1 series' trump card has always been its wet performance (and therefore a better all-rounder for the average motorist), but I reckon that the Michelin Pilot Super Sport currently holds the title for best dry performance and wear for road tyres.

But back on topic, it would the appear that the Potenza RE050 isn't a particularly quiet tyre, perhaps due to its directional tread pattern (the Potenza RE050A has an asymmetric tread pattern).

my RE050s got noticeably noisy at 22,000km. Like you, the dealer mentioned feathering and cupping on the rears. I had the suspension aligned (only small adjustments were made as the settings were within limits) however, the damage was done and after 2000 more kms, I couldn't bear with the noisy ride and changed to Michelin PS3s. Now, 38,000km later, the Michelins still have about 4-5000km to go.

my recommendation is to go and check the suspension alignment

When i had my Rav4, the OEM Bridgestone HT D687 lasted 65,000 and i thought it was a great wear... but in hindsight the grip was just poor.

Tyre wear is never a warranty item, it's a consumable item.

I've driven my GTI in both 17" RE050 and 18" RE050A, and personally i think the RE050A is quieter.

However with the GTI, grippy tyres is my preference and i'm now using Advan AD08 on my 17" and surprisingly they're not too noisy.

I think if you want quiet tyres, go for Advan dB, but i don't think these tyres are designed to be driven on aggressively though.

If the Bridgestones are NOT directional then reverse the rotation. It will take a couple of thousand km, but eventually the tops of the feathers will wear off & the noise will reduce a bit. Keep in mind that most tyres get noisier as the tread wears (because a lot of the sipes & cuts are only half tread depth)

100,000km out of performance tyres? I don't think so. I drive like a granny & rotate my tyres every 10,000-15,000km & 60,000km would be really pushing it (like down to the wear bars & dangerous). 30,000km-45,000km would be the norm.

100,000km out of a set of tyres! Were they Nankangs? I wouldn't want tyres that hard anywhere near a car of mine. I've never had tyres that lasted more than 40,000km.

After 13,000km I am more than sick of the lack of grip from the standard Bridgestone RE050s so I've changed to the new RE002s. More grip, more progressive and a lot quieter.
If you dig a hole and it is in the wrong place, digging it deeper isn't going to help.

from memory, i think mostly 4WD tyres maybe able to get anywhere from 60,000kms to 80,000kms easy. did heard some muddie last 100,000kms. but definitely not from a performance tyres for sure.

my bridgestone on my previous car lasted about 60,000kms (yes I choose to drive the most economy way), about 5,000kms more than the original Conti that came with the car.

a mate finished his dunlop sports maxx gt in 10,000k's and 4 mths... he definately is not an economical driver!

hard rubber on a GTI / R = not worthy according to Correy?
