  • Kumho KU36 track tyres - how noisy??

    Hi guys,

I've got an R32 and do about 3 or 4 track days at QR per year. I don't want the hassle of an extra set of rims so looking for a tyre that will work on the track and street.

The guys at Option 1 Garage in Brisbane recommend the Kumho KU36 which is designed for track days but road legal. I'm told they have sold them to a few Watercooled forum members driving GTi's. Option 1 do however advise that these tyres are a bit noiser on the highway than conventional road tyres.

My question is this - how much noisier are they?? Does anyone have any experience with these? I don't mind them being a little bit noisier but don't want it sounding like off road tyres on a 4WD.

At first they are all good. Once a bit worn your car sounds like a freight train.

Sounded like i had stuffed wheel bearings.

There are other semi slick options out there. They will all be a bit noisy i assume.

How about a cheap set of wheels with either semi's so you can drive to the track or full slicks?

Falken RT615 are fairly consistent in noise throughout their life. Similar concept in tyre - not a true semi-slick but look the part.

You will wear out the track tyres quite often doing road miles. There are heaps of affordable rims on eBay for your car and changing wheels at the track isn't that much of a hassle.
