All-season tyres (marked with M+S on the sidewall) are designed to work in the dry, wet & light snow. Mainly sold on the North American market, they tend to have a smoother ride, make less noise, and last longer - at the expense of performance of course. They aren't commonly used elsewhere in the world, as other markets which experience snowfall (Scandinavia, Central Europe, North Asia, etc.) alternate between summer and winter tyres. The vast majority of tyres sold on the Australian market are summer tyres.

With that in mind, I think the Continental ExtremeContact DWS would best suit your needs, though both variants seem to generate positive comments on Tire Rack regarding noise. Not very expensive either, thanks to the current exchange rate.

I am just about to place an order through Tirerack for 4 x Kumho Ecsta SPT (KU31) 225/40 ZR18 92Y tyres.

$110ea + $245 shipping = $685 US. With the healthy exchange rate, but minus the wire transfer charges, it should work out about the same in AUD.

Had these on my old Mazda 3 and loved them. Fantastic value, good (if not great) performance (wet and dry), good durability and are nice and quiet for the first 5,000-10,000kms if I remember correctly.

Best I could get in Aus was $760 shipped over from ST George Tyres. In Perth, no one really wanted to talk to me unless I was ready to book in!

I thought about the S Drives briefly, but decided to be a tightarse.

The Continetal DWS did seem like the one out of the 2.
oh forgot about the kumho ecstas! i had them on my A8 reps, cant remember them being a bad tyre either, although i sold them before i used them a great deal...
Would rather go for something softer i think. I cant push my car without it rubbing or breaking something so no point in going faster...
Sent off to get a price on the Continetal DWS shipped at tirerack so ill post up how i go

peoples thoughts?
I wouldnt have to pay tax would i as the exchange rate will bring that price down not up?

Wouldn't the regular DW be better suited to Aus conditions? We don't need an all-season tyre do we? The ExtremeContact DW gets extremely good reviews on TireRack. Has anybody had experience with them in Aus?

Another tyre worth looking at is the Dunlop Maxx TT. A great tyre at an awesome price and had very good reviews in the Motor annual tyre test.

No, 215/40/18 is an odd size.
But is 225 width ok for your application? The options here below are both the load rating you want too

i could run 225s up front but theres not much room and id be rubbing a fair bit, then id want to run 235 on the rear to match and theres no room for that unless i go truck loads of camber

That sucks

Do you know what the differences are in construction of the all weather tyre, or if it's just a tread pattern difference? Because if it's a slightly softer compound, then you might burn through them quickly in our hot Aussie weather...

Australian conditions doesn't warrant the need for all season tyres, but for reasons I've already outlined, the DWS better meets the requirements of the OP.

The DWS has a treadwear rating of 540, compared to the DW (340) and the SC3 (280), so I would expect the DWS to last longer, regardless of ambient temperature.

If you're referring to the tyres, I don't the ExtremeContact DW/DWS are sold in Europe or Australia. Seems to be designed and made for the North American market only.

I wonder why? They're a best seller on Tirerack and get terrific reviews to boot! Would they be a better all-rounder than a Maxxsport TT or Pilot Sport?

Shall find out. Have ordered them and hopefully will get to take them for a long drive to melbourne shortly.

Another positive i noticed before ordering these, according to there specs a 215/40 is ok by manufactors specs to be fitted to a 8.5" wide wheel.
Not sure if this is the case for all brand tyres, but i thought 225 would have been the minimum
