  • New Continental SportContact 5 to replace SportContact 3

    Continental will launch the new SportContact 5 in Europe from Spring (our Autumn) this year, replacing the SportContact 3. Sizes will initially range from 17" to 18", as the SportContact 5P (released in 2010) already takes care of the upper end market i.e. 18" to 23".

    They claim reductions in both the conflicting goals of rolling resistance and wet braking distances, whilst further improving dry handling and braking performance.

    Link - Continental Tires - New: ContiSportContact 5

    Performance increases relative to predecessor (ContiSportContact 3 = 100%)

    Wet braking = 109%
    Aquaplaning = 101%
    Dry braking = 104%
    Dry handling = 105%
    Rolling resistance = 112%
    Wear = 113%
    Noise = 105%

    Also to be released at the same time is the EcoContact 5, which will replace the EcoContact 3, and will cover sizes from 14" to 16".

    Is there anyone with experience with this tire?

    I'm keen on a set at $250ea from Bob Jane, but a UK tire review site has me worried. Very mixed reviews and most people getting under 20k miles

    My budget is strictly under $200-250ea. What tires would everyone recommend for an all round great tire, looking to reduce braking distance wet+dry, and hold corners well.

    Looking at 235/40/18

    Cheers!

      You'll get Michelin PS3 for ~$210 ea from Tempe Tyres in Syd. They will freight to MEL.

      I have no idea where the cheap tyre places are in MEL. I also have no idea why people shop for tyres at BJs as they are generally among the more expensive.

        If you ask for a price match, then you're more than likely to get it under their 'Best Tyre Price Guarantee'

        Plus if you get tyres freighted from Tempe or St Georges or Ozzy etc, you still need to pay someone to fit and balance them.

          Of course you do - count on $15 /tyre.

          There must be some high turnover / low mark-up tyre places in MEL. Or is it just Sydney-siders that try & beat the last penny out of retailers?

            Sydney is the toughest tyre retailing market in Australia, without a doubt.

            Just pointing out that as well as the freight, you need to factor the fit/balancing charge, when buying from the online retailers

              Standard fitment on my C63. Excellent grip and wet handling but no idea as to what distance you will get out of them as the C63 eats tyres at a phenomal rate.

                GRP, Im pretty sure the bob jane guy mentioned you on the phone haha.

                Yes my mate just got a set of PS3s on his Megane RS $250 from USA. Gotta look that up. Sounds much better. Will try getting the best price guarantee. Bob Janes are just close and reliable for me. Jax is closer but they dont have much.

                  The price on the Continentals is not bad compared to what you would pay in the USA. The small saving you make would be eaten up by the huge freight bill (can work out at US $100 a tyre approx) likely making a US buy a no go for what you want. I am currently looking at Michelin Pilot Super Sports which in the US are under half the best price I can get in Aus.

                          I do like that continental supply some comparisons like that.

                          I am always weary of 'tyre reviews' as its both subjective and prone to error on the part of the 'operator'- the car, alignment, and the conditions.... everything.

                          If continental say the SC5's will be that much better (those %ages) compared to SC3, then they will grace my skoda's wheels next time I think, as I have a very subjective and personal love of continental tyres . I love my SC3's.

                            Hmm is it just me or is the sc3 very noisy (only traveled 5k kms)? i came from 17s with Toyo Teo + which seemed to produce less tyre noise,
                            are the PS3 better for tyre noise ?
                            or is it expected when going from 17-18s to make more noise ?

                            Thanks,
