Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Cost of tires for the R

    Hi everyone,

I've been a long time reader, and the forum has been most informative. I'm looking to place down an order for the R soon, and just wondering if anyone know the rough ballpark for tires for the R (for both 18" and 19").

I'm contemplating on whether to stick with the stock 18" rims or upgrade to the 19" and trying to budget in the costs of tires. I would probably look for a set of decent rubber when the time comes, so it'll be great if anyone can point me in the right direction as to roughly how much they cost!

    Much appreciated!

Well if you want quality you are going to have to dig deep.. I have just paid $450 a corner for 17" Potenza RE050A.. I am guessing 18s and 19s are going to be a hundred readies more per inch

Tyres on 18" rims are not excessively expensive. My Pug 308 had the same sized wheel as the R I have on order. 4 x Pirelli P Zero Neros were $1080.

I wouldn't touch 19" rims as I sometimes venture down dirt tracks for beaches/camping. Denting large rims is easy. It only takes a pothole and then you either need to replace or have the wheel re-rolled... Expensive. If $'s are guiding light to your decision, go the 18's.

As with everything, you just need to shop around. The Pirellis ranged from $515 to $270 a tyre. Big diff!

          Ummmm, I dont think so.
$345 is starting price for their Potenzas
I think you will find that price is for the 225/50r17.
I ve been buying 215/40R18's for my MPS and they are consistantly around $465/each.
I could be wrong but going by their spec sheet all those tyres listed wouldn't be the same price (275/30R20 for $345? I don't think so)

Depends how deep your pockets are and how much you want to stick to the "big name brands"
Just got Kumhos for my new 19"s (225/35/19) for $250 a corner whereas Contis where $500 plus.
Very happy with my decision so far

That'd be tirerack.com, and yes, absolutely.

I purchased a set of four Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric in 225/40 R18 from tirerack a couple of months back; all up, including shipping to Adelaide (which took 5 days!), I paid under $1,100, and they were great to deal with too. Cost me another $100 to have the tyres fitted at my local shop. Compare that to the $500-odd per-tyre price if bought locally - there's just no comparison. While we have parity (or near parity) with the US dollar, if you're looking for premium rubber, importing is the way to go.

This extra cost to the 19" is really getting to me! Otherwise it would be such an easy decision to get the 19" on my R!

The price difference in tyres will be a bit, but probably not more then a couple hundred dollars. When you think about how long a set of tyres will last you its not a huge difference in price. I know I'd pay the little bit extra if I preffered the look of the bigger wheels... If you're forking out a fair bit of money for a brand new car, you may as well pay the little bit extra and have it just the way you would like it, in my opinion atleast.

+1 .... tirerack were fantastic... My F1 Assym 18's cost me $1054 landed including the wire transfer fee from my bank...

I honestly wouldn't buy local again at the prices I was quoted on the same set of tyres... $485 a corner for Goodyear F1's 225 40 18....

Tirerack is the way to go....i've got 19's on my Mk5 GTI......quoted $600 a corner for Goodyear Eagle F1 Assym's (235 35 19). Had them shipped in 2 seperate shipments about 2 weeks apart (to avoid paying import duty) from Tirerack for $1300 for the set, plus $80 to be fitted locally....all up I saved about $1000. I agree they are also bery easy to deal with, just email them your request and they get a shipped quote to you in a couple of days.

x4 on the tirerack. Paid about $1100 delivered to my door for 4 x RE050a's 225/40/18. No import duty. + $80 fitted and balanced. Was quoted $550 per corner here. No brainer.
