Maxxis & Nexen Tires

I'm running Falken 205/40x16 on my car at the moment but I really need new tires. I've been quote $215 to get new falken's on which compared to my old car which only had 15's seems a good price.

But my boss tells me he can get cheaper tires which are better. The brands are Maxxis 205/40x16 for $155, I know of this brand for MTB's but not on cars and Nexen 205/40x16 for $159 which I've never heard of. Both can do up to 280k of driving or so there rated.

So basically are these good brands or should I go with the Falken's as I've got them on now and haven't had problems with them?

Maxxis for MTBs is a different company than Maxxis for cars. Maxxis for cars is owned by a religious cult & I wouldn't buy them purely for that reason.
Nexen - cheap & cheerful but not fantastic. Personally, I wouldn't buy them.

The 280 doesn't mean that anyone (except my Dad maybe )will get 280km of driving out of them. It is a rating in comparison to other tyres by the same manufacturer.

You don't say what model Falkens you have but if your happy with them, go for it. I realise you pay Canberra tax but have you tried Option 1 Garage? You might find that Kumho or Federal 595RS-R is cheaper from them despite the shipping cost to ACT. Fitting/balance would be about $10 a tyre from Jax or similar.

As i said, the MTB tyres are imported by another company. I have Maxxis Crossmarks on my MTB.

Another vote for the KU31's.
Haven't had a problem with them for 3000km.

245/45R19's set me back $200 a corner so your's should be around the low - mid 100's.

My car had Nexens on when I purchased it, and they were fine. I really can't fault them, and they lasted well.

I've since had Yoko Advan Sports, which I don't think were any better than the nexens;

and I now have Pirelli P Zeros, which are incredible. No more axle tramp and I'm running much more than stock power.

If you buy Maxxis tyres from a Bob Jane T-Mart, they are sourced from their internal, direct importing arm. The Brethren supplies Maxxis to all other tyre dealers since Bob Jane import them exclusively for their own stores.

Whether they are decent tyres depends on what you are looking for.

Make sure that you check on ebay for prices so that you have an idea on what you could have bought them for.

I would have also recomended KU31 but I don't think they are available in the OPs size, whereas I think the Federals 595RS-R do come in that size. A mate ran them on his MX5 & was very happy with them - BTW, he's from the ACT too

Which patterns are we talking about. I consider myself a bit of an authority on both brands (I've worked for distributors of both brands) so I can probably give you fairly accurate feedback.

Nexen N3000s are Great I have had em on a few cars and they are grippy and long lasting.
The directional pattern looks the grouse too.

Ended up getting Falken ze-912's at a price I couldn't refuse. But good to know about the other tires if I'm not so lucky in the future
