Centre bore question

Hi all,
I'm after a set of wheels for my gfs car, similar to the older golf/bmw ones that get posted up here. only difference is she has a 56.0 centre bore, where most of the wheels ive been looking at are 57.1
i could get hub rings made up no problem, except they'd be so thin im not sure if they'd just break etc.
my question is, will i have any problems with 57.1 over 56 (wheel wobbles etc) or am i best to get the centre bored out to allow for normal size hub ring?

They won't break mate (regarding thin hub-centric rings), and they'll do the job. Much better to have the hub-centric rings in than nothing at all (and much less hassle than boring out the centrebore of the wheels so that they can take larger ones; wayyy too much work).

sweeet. spose if they are not lose the weight will be transfered through them no matter what thickness.

They dont really take much weight. The wheel is bolted in place and the bolts handle the weight transfer. The cenric rings centre the wheel exactly and stop wheel wobble.

The job of wheel bolts is to pull the wheel in against the wheel hub, where the centre bore fits snuggly over the "nose" of the hub. Wheel bolts are strong in tension along their length (so great for pulling the wheels in nice and tight against the hub), but weak in shear across their width (terrible at carrying weight).

That's why it's so important to have wheels and hubs with matching centre bores. Given the shape and layout of the wheel studs/bolts, there'd be very little wobble anyway because the spacing and design means there's no movement anyway.

i would get the rings... had an issue with this on a set of wheels years ago and no matter how hard i tried i could not bolt them up centered, even tho the bolts and wheel holes were angled to allow better alignment. The rings will centre the wheels perfectly.

i have run plenty of wheels without the rite centre bore although not ideal its fine, as the wheel locates and centres on the taper or each wheel bolt.

most annoying thing is putting the wheel on and lining up the hole.

its a problem that ill be going from a 56centre bore to 57.1 (1.1mm difference), thats .5mm space all the way around. imagine making that? so was really wondering if .5mm all the way around will matter?

Easy enough to make. Plastic would be easily enough moulded if you wanted to make lots.

If I was doing them in metal I'd probably use 0.5mm sheet, cut a strip, roll it & braze or silver solder the butt joint & file it smooth & slide it over the hub as a firm press fit. You could machine it on a lathe as well but forming from strip would be achievable at home in the garage and the material would be cheaper.

The other thing you could do is just suck it & see. If it feels good then go no further. My Golf only had 2 hub rings & was fine all the way to $160

ooo, sheet metal idea! thinking outside the box (or maybe im just not thinking straight atm)

I have a lathe at home in my garage actually so either method is no probs haha

Now to find some wheels both her and I approve of! I'll see how i go and post up results.
