  • VR6 Body roll

I swear i posted this before... But i just can't find it. Maybe i'm just going blind...

I have a VR6 with coilovers - and it still has a fair amount of body roll
Before I go forking out for strut braces and sway bars, can any one let me know if this will fix te problem.

The coilovers i have are D1 (they came with the car, well Husband put them in before it came to me) i'm thinking they could be a bit on the cheaper side...

    Would my best option be to buy the sway bars/strut braces and hope for the best? Or;
Bite the bullet and put decent Coilovers in it?

Advice would be very much appreciated
I'm going to the pub... I may be some time...

    Hey Stephy,

No idea on what coilovers you are running, but a rear swaybar should help. Are your coilovers adjustable? This might be an easy fix. How old is the VR6? It may be time to upgrade the bushes which will aid the whole suspension.

How many kms on the coilovers? They could be nearning the end of their life.

I don't know much about the VR6's sorry, but I assume it already has a soft front swaybar. A strut brace helps handling, I don't think it would change the bodyroll much.

A rear sway is easy to install, a front sway often requires dropping the subframe or other fun stuff, so is less of a DIY and better to do with other parts.

Rear swaybar should sort your out.
Jury is out on whether a front swaybar is a worthwhile mod on a VR6.

Remember that adding a swaybar does more than just reduce body roll, it will effect turning characteristics too. The general rule, as I understand it, is:

Car oversteers = add a stiffer front bar
Car understeers = add a stiffer rear bar

For body roll also consider strut braces to reduce flex.

Front strutbrace is a good cheap and easy upgrade which tightens up the front end of the car and a rear swaybar will help tighten up the rear (but can induce some oversteer if to tight/big).
If you are after front and rear swaybars, I can help you out

I have upgraded some of the bushes already to polyuerethane (spelling??), the coilovers are actually called D2s (from memory Matt paid about $1500 for them, so they aren't bottom end, but they aren't that great either - didn't have much choice locally...) and are about 12 months old with less than 15k on them, and fully adjustable. Had them set so low that i now need to fix the sump... So i've raised the car and have them set on full hard, it seems to have the same amount of body roll at both heights (just no rubbing anymore!)
Lorenz - interested in sway bars, please PM me
Thanks, might add a front strut brace for good measure too - can anyone help me on that?

Body roll front, rear or both? Full hard on bump or rebound?

Oh, and speak to Aydan (gldgti). His Mk3 TDI is the best handling Mk3 i've ever driven. Really something special for what it is. Ask him what he has in it (i can't remember). 2 different engines, but it should give you a good idea regardless.

Fanks matey - I'm aiming to get it like my Polo - it is an evil oversized Gokart. I really miss the handling in this - it reminds me of a boat I know it's harsh.
the bushes are done and it has coilovers... I'll fit sway bars & Strut braces first and see how it goes. I'm getting wide 17s with Falken tyres on it soon so maybe that will help (wishful thinking).
Body roll everywhere - have the coilovers on the hardest setting on everything even when they were Loooooooooowwwwwww it had body roll, it used to ram the wheels into the guards when i'd go around a corner too fast. (and smash my sump to god knows where everytime i went over a bump too fast)

28mm Neuspeed rear swaybar made a HUGE difference on mine, masses more steering and massively reduced body roll, set it on hard for drifting action
