  • Coilvers vs springs

So i am working out what suspension to get for the new Tiguan.
Keep in mind it will barely ever be taken off-road, and when it does, it will be for dirt roads to national parks rather than normal off-roading.
It will also only see the track maybe once or twice in it's lifetime.

I was originally looking at just H&R springs as they were a cheap option and they give it a nice drop (35mm)
However i did some more research and the H&R coilovers seem to give a nice ride and allow the variability of height.

Most of the information on the net seems to centre around jap cars and give s bad rap for coilovers saying they give harsh ride quality and are only worth it for track use.

Can anyone else provide Euro/VW specific advice on these apparent issues and whether or not it would be worth it?

Price is no option as i don't really mind paying extra for coilovers if the benefit is worth it.

The ride adjustability and dampening adjustability is easily worth the extra money. Plus you might not be happy with the drop ??

That is what my main line of thinking was.
I would probably run them wound all the way/most of the way down for normal driving, and wind them back up if i was going to go on dirt tracks etc.

The conscience then kicks in and asks why i am spending $800 more when it is almost certain that i won't be bothered to adjust them anymore lol.

a quality coilover will ride better than a stock shock/aftermarket spring combo.

Plus, you can adjust the height to where YOU want it, its a bit hit and miss with springs

That's what i really wanted to know.

I wasn't willing to fork out the extra $800 if the outcome was going to be negligable/worse.
I am hoping to reduce a lot of the body roll with the coilovers as well as reducing the gap between the guasrd and the tyres

body roll will be all but eliminated!!

Plus, the H&R 35mm drop springs don't do anything for me. A Tig with them in still looks like its on Stilts

if your going to lower it, do it properly

Awesome, i was hoping it owuld negate the body roll as that is probably hte biggest downfall of the Tig.

I have seen pics of Tig's on H&R springs only and they do still sit a bit high.
I would prefer the guards to sit just above the tyres.
I found a picture of a tig on coilovers on vortex that inspired me.

Looks like coilovers for me then.

It is such a versatile vehicle.
That is what drew me to purchase one.

It looks good lowered and that de-badged one still has another 1cm of winding down before it hits the end.

Mmmm, coilovers + big wheels will look the goods I think.

for coilovers, check out international stores like www.tirerack.com

its a whole lot cheaper to import then fit locally, than to buy locally, just make sure you do your homework before committing.

the only risk with importing is the warranty

I am going to go through GTI Dave for the suspension as he gets H&R bits in.

Had a look on tirerack but they don't show the coilovers for the tiguan and I would prefer to go through Dave to support the VW community.

Dave is a good guy, but you will be able to get them a lot cheaper from the US.

In relation to adjusting when going offroad, worth finding out how they are adjusted.

For example, some coilover systems required the mechanism to be removed to adjust rebound.

Are these fully adjustable or just rebound?

Have you looked into brands other than H&R?

I don't mind paying a little extra to support an Aussie VW enthusiast.

I believe the H&R springs are fully adjustable i.e. can be wound up and down as Milo (german tiguan owner on vortex) has them.
They are adjusted by a knob on the base of the suspension set i believe form the pictures.

I looked into some from stratmosphere however i want something i know will perform well and H&R have a good brand following.
Also, the tiguan is relatively untouched by tuners, the H&R ones were the only suspension i knew of for it previously.

Will have a look at the KW ones though.

Stratmosphere advertised on vortex, for $799USD + $300 or so for shipping.
                              They sell V-Maxx brand coilovers.
