Yes they are legal. If your not changing the design from OEM then yes. If you have to fabriacte of modify anything then you need an Engineer certificate.
Coilovers are the same design as OEM suspension which is a part that gets changed with wear and tear. The only difference between the coilovers and OEM is that coilovers can be adjusted.

they're not. but i believe some one got the engineered by drilling and havinga stop on the thread so that the locking plates couldn't move.
I think it's just easier to borrow a stock set from someone (or have spare set handy) and just switch when need be

You make a good point there Tim and you may even be right about this one. But I dont understand what you mean by changing suspension design. Most coilovers are direct bolt in replacement for the factory suspension.
By the way the car was an EVO 9 TMR 220 bought off the showroom floor.

ok guys,
ive got some news about coilover legalities
im planning to sell my mk1 with the coilovers fitted, i will also be getting a RWC for the sale, i called up a few ppl who do roadies and asked the legality of coilovers, he said coilovers pass RWC under requirements of: being a straight swap from spring/shock kit, that means the chassis must not be modified in any way to fit coilovers, and the other thing is that it obviously has to be at legal height AND THATS IT! not bad aye.......
