hey guys, for what it's worth here is the combination that I recommend... How do I know I hear you ask... I've spent a lot of time in suspension and bush development on the track and street so there is some knowledge... For street & performance cars I have found that urethane works well in the lower front control arm bushes and sway bar mounts and links on both the Mk1 & Mk2 Golfs, but my advise is to stick with the O.E. or quality aftermarket rubber bushes in the rear beam pivots... Superpro has a urethane listing but this is one place, in my opinion, where the rubber is superior.. Stick with rubber in the front strut top mounts as well. Urethane offers zero benefit in this place and can risk damaging your strut towers with metal fatigue and paint cracking. Pure race car applications are a little different re this application for a lot of strut tops as you just want the thing to be fast and stiff. If it falls apart after a couple of seasons through metal fatigue then that's just racing. The other thing about urethane is that it is really only useful as a pivoting bush not a load carrying bush. Urethane also lacks 'memory' whereas bonded rubber bushes have a memory and will return to their original position which is why rubber works better in the rear pivots. Sometimes the O.E. guys got it right.
I agree mate, thats why i choose to keep the factory solids in the control arms in the polo and i also fit solid rubber ones to the Golfs. Makes sense.
