  • Mk1 Wheel Width

    Hi guys,

Got a couple of Qs re wheel width for a mk1.

I am looking to buy a set of wheels for my 76 mk1 which are 13x7. Are these gonna be too wide? (Not sure of the offset yet - although i believe they're off a Gemini).

Also, what would be the best tyre size for these suckers?

The steering is already quite heavy with my steelies, and I am worried its just going to get worse. (sorry can't remember width of my steelies off the top of my head, but i think i have 175's tyres - they're Polo steelies). Actually i reckon my steering is heavier than it should be?? Any ideas how to rectify that too??

    Thanks in advance.

They are Sime tyres, hard to find but can be done

You will need to get longer wheel bolts and also shim down your front brakes with a grinder to clear the calipers!

Also I recommend getting 20mm spacers at the back for a good stance otherwise the fronts stick out more than the rears and it doesn't look right.

so what's the go with the Gemini bolts dom? are they longer?

i was looking at going all patriotic and had my eye on some dragways, but they've sold. plenty more around tho it seems.

man, it's hard getting any sense out of "Gemmy" ppl tho

Excuse my n00bishness, but how come you need these bolts?

Were you're hotwires on a Gemini originally Steve? have they got the 57 centre bore or did you need to get it machined??

                        Cheers bro

No not sure what the centre bore is but best thing to do is get hub-centric spacers I still need to get them lol.

You need those bolts cause they have a sleeve that fits snug in the wheel while the threadgoes in the hub

if the wheels are off a gem you'll need hub centric spacers. gem's centre bores are roughly 70mm. as well as the special bolts.
