Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Higher the positive number the more the wheel sits in the arch. The lower the number the more the wheel sticks out. If the mounting face is very low (negative 6mm) this happens

Just wanna ask a few questions relating to this offset business...

I read somewhere that most FF cars use high positive offsets, whereas most FR/MR cars use low positive/negative offsets. What's the reasoning for this?

And also, what are the consequences of using low positive/negative offset wheels on FF cars, like a Golf?
        Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
        Present: Mk3 Golf variant.

Moderation is the key. Popular opinion suggests excessive wheel bearing wear. I always thought the positive offset was a packaging factor where in a fwd the drive shafts are either side of the gearbox compared to a rwd where they exit the diff...
