  • Damn Coilovers !!! Sorted

They are driving me insane !!

I have spent about 3 hours trying to loosen one !! I had a go a while back and had no cigar.

I managed to loosen one of the locking rings, but the ring that the spring sits on (that adjusts the height) will not move.

I've soaked it in de-greaser, WD40 and FKs own lube spray.

I've had a bar on the end of the C spanner and tried moving it both ways, got nowhere, i hate those damn C spanners, they slip off so easily.

I've tried hitting the end of the C spanner to try and free it up but still no luck after 2-3 hours.

Anyone got any advise ? Would be much appreciated, sick of the uneven ride height.

    Matt

:| They can't be corroded and stuck on, could they? There's no salt on Aussie roads so that shouldn't be a problem...

You can have someone stand on the disc brakes while you try and coax it to spin. Sometimes the load makes it really hard to spin the spring collars - I get that problem but I do manage to spin it, little bit at a time though. Make sure you use jack stands.

I had this same problem on a old car of mine, I used a brass punch on the notches and gave it all hell til it loosed off. But I had abit of room in the wheel arch so I dont know how it will go on yours.

        Hope this helps

          Cheers Ray.

Mine were on the car in the UK, but they are stainless, there is no rust on them at all. They are FK Silverline X, basically Koni inserts with FK springs.

Also they are the type with the smaller spring at the bottom which takes the load off the collar for adjusting it.

Good ideas though mate, thanks for the reply ...

I have been hitting the ring notches too, bit awkward but still no luck.

Yeah maybe a larger bar on the C spanner will do it.

Think i may have to soak them in more oil over some time ....

remember torque = force x distance so if you double the length of the bar it doubles the torque

Gentle heat from a hot air gun. Or if you think that's too severe, wrap some cloths around it and soak them in boiling water.

Gentle tapping from a hammer, all the way round the nut. Work your way around the net a few times while tapping.

Heat cycling is always good. A can of freezer spray from **** Smith on top of the warming up might help.

                    And patience of course.

I used one of those massive flat head screw drivers in the notches and then hitting the end of the screw driver with a hammer. Something like this but it worked

Thats what i've been doing, those C spanners are a NIGHTMARE !! I hate them so much, they are a prick to use.

I loosened the damn thing after an overnight bath in WD40 and some heat gun action this morning, but still can't turn it with the spanners, i've had to knock it all the way, which i didn't want to do cos it damages those notches every time. It is taking me forever, had to stop and have a rant about it !!

Getting there, just hope i don't have to adjust them too much to get it level ...

You're lucky they aren't AVOs. They were much worse for it. Alloy on steel, shocking.
