Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Q5 wheels (17x8et39) on a MkVII Golf Wagon

Hi Guys, I thought I would do a post on my recent change of wheels. Wheel spec detail heavy but that's important when choosing wheels.

I've included photos from the gumtree ad, my car with stock rims on the hoist and then a few phone quality photos to show the difference.

Stock is 15x6et43, with 195/65r15 tyres.

I bought the Q5 rims, specs 17x8et39, with 235/65r17 tyres for $140 cash. I sold the 4 tyres for $50 at a second hand tyre dealer so rims owe me $90.

Using Online Wheel and Tyre Fitment Calculator. Offset, Tyre Stretch and Speedo Error | Will They Fit (photos attached) I knew that the new rims with a 225/45 tyre would have an almost perfect match to the standard rolling diameter.

I bought Bridgestone Potenza RE003's through their 4 for 3 deal (@$185 per tyre), so tyres owe me $555 for the full set.

I know style is subjective, BUT I thought this post could help those looking for something slightly more unique than the standard OEM Golf/regular aftermarket options, especially when most used Golf wheels that I saw had 235/45 tyres.

I'm super happy with the flush look and would love to lower it but with my sales rep job I would prefer to have more clearance up all round. I think the flat design of the Q5 rims also add to it - perhaps if people understood offsets better they wouldn't go for 19" and sacrifice the extra tyre profile.

    Criticism welcome.
