Yeah the mid bass quality does seem to vary with model to model. MKIV and MKV enjoy very large sealed doors, easy to plaster s/deadening everywhere and a great result. Those earlier models that have the door card need a fair bit of work to get them up to the same standard.

You seem pretty set on getting the Type X's...

SQ is a funny thing, to have an SQ system you really should have a sub and one that plays very very low. However, if you look at the way SQ is judged, sub bass only makes up a bee's **** of the end score ( shows releavence )...

But for normal music, you will be surprised what even a decent 8inch sub can do with some power

About the point on us Mk3 having crap mid bass, probably the only way to get it up to standard is to rebuild pocket where the speaker sits. I think Glidn was showing me his build.

Perhaps start your rebuild with something like this

Would Nirvana, be considered as heavy metal ? I listen to it with my 10" it sound prefect, but with my friend 12" I reckon it's too drony for my liking. So I reckon consider a 8" or 10".

Generally speaking, when you have good SQ, the bass should be blended in with the music, so when mummy and daddy listen, they shouldn't even know you have sub until you crank it up and give them a good front and back massage.

I'm not hella concerned with keeping the Type-X's, its more of what can I get away with given the least outlay The other thing is that when I really crank it, they do begin to come into their own. So i'm thinking maybe its just a case of crap door cards and not enough power.

Here's a question. I play drums, have done for 10 years. I need every bit of space in my boot to transport my gear. IF I go a sub (regardless of size) - can I just simply disconnect it and yank out the box when I need to? Is its amp going to have a cry and explode?

I was thinking the other day, its not fair when your mums volvo s40 has a better sounding stock stereo then mine. Even my sisters alpine head unit + 4 blown coax's sound better in her honda concerto. CRIMES!!!!!

Perhaps you should build the sub enclosure into the spare wheel with a protective cover. That way you could leave it in and have it protected as well.

There is no reason why physically a 15inch sub can't play as fast as a 10inch sub. Getting the box right is the key to the response and the amp will play a vital role in control. Remember a speakers job is to reproduce ( just like me ), if it gets delivered crap, it will play crap....

of course there in only one real problem for this poor man, the spare wheel well in a MK3 and mk2 are a joke.

I feel you should try one of these 2 idea before any further money outlay.

1.Firstly if you are using them in standard door pocket, seal the door pocket to the door skin with some silicon on the inside, then fill with abit of dacron, or even better Dynazorb behind the speaker.

See how that sounds if still not good.

Build door pods and use a wooden spacer behind door skin and door and bolt to door and then bolt the door skin to that.

This could proof to be very beneficial.

You joking, I thought you could at least get about 15-20litres out of it, but nothing would surprise me with these mkIII, they sound really really sucky. Ill have to think of something else... infinate baffle perhaps?

I agree about the wheel well size. i only just managed to get a smallish 4ch in there, let alone a sub.

Mr Charisma, yeah sorry the MK3 has very good acoustics for a stereo, but not that much room, hence i keep saying to install amp/s under back seat.
and then sub into rear left panel.

if you want 15 - 20 litres in spare wheel well of a mk3 you will have to lose about 100ish mm of depth.

I suppose where would the fun be if it was all easy?

Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and make some sacrifices.

What are you thinking of doing now Matt?

One word of warning would be dont butcher your car and make sure you can revert it back to it's stock form... I made that mistake previously in my other car and I sworn that I'd never make the same mistake again...

I've been distracted by a few other things lately. I'm trying to finish off renovating my bedroom, bought a dieselgeek short shifter and have been completely broke (thanks mostly to the bedroom stuff!).

I want to really thank you all for the ideas and opinions. At this stage I will probably look at trying to seal the doors properly and upgrading the amp along with some coax's in the rear doors for a bit of rear fill.

Not sure sure what I'll do with subs. An 8" or a 10" sounds ok. If by some miracle it was possible to fit a sub in the cabin somewhere instead of the boot i'd be more keen doing it.

well if you are not worried about front passenger foot space you can build an 8" easily in there only require 12l of space maximum.

Have you considered using the boot of the car? Just have them implanted side on (not preferable for SQ though) in a sealed/ported fibreglass box? Wont be cheap to do but definately seen it being done before.

Under the seat's another suggestion. I myself at once stage was thinking whether or not to build a sub box small enough to bit into my pull out draw/seat height adjustment section. However, ensure that there is enough room for the sub to clear during it's maximum extrusion. If not, you'll obviously damaged your sub. You'd be looking at a 8" that requires very minimal box size. So you're looking at the likes of an ID 8" or a Hertz HSK8". If memory doesnt serve me wrongly, the Hertz HSK 8" only requires some ridiculous amount like 5L.

                                *Edit
                                found it - it's 7L's for a sealed box. http://www.hertzaudiovideo.com/Doc/pdf_hx200.pdf
