  • Bluetooth audio - steering wheel control and headunit information

On my MY13 GTi I could control the Bluetooth audio (iPhone) via steering wheel controls and the head unit, plus track information was displayed on the head unit.

On my MY11 R I can only control the track skipping on my phone, and no information is displayed on the head unit.

How do I go about getting head unit / steering wheel control and audio information on the head unit on the R? Do I need a new Bluetooth module? If so, which one?

You need a new Bluetooth module only. 9W7 version 7P60...J or higher iirc.

The older RCD510's (5K0 035 190 and 3C8 035 190) do not support BT track info display from an iPhone/iPod you need a 5K0 035 190 A or B version which were introduced in late 2011 to the VW range.
I suspect your 2011 Golf R has one of the older units (5K0 035 190) and the GTI has one of the latter.

As Ryan_R as said you will also have to update the BT unit as there will be phone book display errors as the new units use a slightly different protocol

The below is a link to the latest version B unit made by Bosch the A version has a RVC input but are quite rare and expensive $350 upwards

Thanks. I purchased the car second hand from a dealer, and they had recently fitted Bluetooth as it was being used by their fleet manager (car didn't come from the factory with it).

The car has phone book display errors, so the dealer will replace the head unit with a new model which will hopefully fix the phone book display errors (and show audio information). I suspect it has a new BT unit so fingers crossed.
