Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • OEM versus aftermarket car entertainment opinions

    Hi everyone,

I'm not posting this to get ideas for any specific after market media units, but rather what your opinion on fitting an after market media unit at all is? I mean this in terms of does it add to the car or take something away because you have removed the official device? Years down the track when it comes time to sell, would an aftermarket media device sway you to buy the car or deter you?

I'm somewhat of the opinion that I like the car to look the way it was designed by VW, but as I have just bought a 2nd hand Mk6 I'm considering my options for getting Bluetooth - either get the official VW unit installed or look into a Pioneer unit, which are going to the the first after-market company to offer Apple CarPlay on their devices. If I do go aftermarket, it will definitely be CarPlay enabled (once released).

    Cheers.

Personally, I think there's a lot of value in OEM, and will stick with it if at all possible (when it comes to aesthetics and parts that are readily visible anyway). If the OEM options are obviously inferior then that's another matter, but in the case of headunits, there's nothing out there that beats the VW options in all areas (especially in terms of reliability).
