  • Old MFD Stereo SatNav and Aux iPhone connection (Bury Bluetooth already installed)

    Background
I’ll admit upfront that I am not an earlier adopter of technology, I even still occasionally use my record player and tape deck at home!

I have a 2007 Multivan with the MFD head unit with Factory Sat Nav and the 6 CD stacker under the driver’s seat.

My previous employer installed a Bury Bluetooth car kit originally when I had a BlackBerry. I’ve now changed jobs and have an iPhone 4s and an updated Bury cradle. It all works fine as it charges, turns on the stereo when a call comes in as it uses stereo speakers. It also switches between radio/CD and Phone when making or receiving calls.

I like having the 6 CD stacker as the kids are into the CD talking books and that makes trips so much better.

    Problem
I would like to be able to connect the iPhone to the stereo in order to play iTunes and other music I have stored on the iPhone. I understand this is not possible as the head unit does not have this capability.

I’d like to be able to achieve this simply and without replacing the head unit whilst retaining the use of the CD stacker. I also don’t need to achieve this by Bluetooth as the phone situation is sorted via the Bury set up.

I am not really interested in doing this by an FM modulator due to quality of sound.

    Possible Solution?
From what I can gather by using Google to become an ‘expert’ it could be possible to use the Aux input jacks in the back of the head unit and there seems to be a video and audio jack(??) Could I therefore connect a cable to the jacks and run it to the Bury cradle and plug it into the earphone plug in the iPhone which is accessible whilst the phone is in the Bury cradle. I’m happy to have to operate everything via the phone instead of the using the head unit and this method of connection should still mean that the cd stacker operates as per normal.

I am unsure if the hardwired Bury set up uses the Aux ports on the back of the head unit, at this stage I’ll assume that it is doesn’t.

    Is this a workable solution?

If it is, is it simply a matter of using head unit removal keys to pull out the stereo, checking the Aux ports are free, what type of plug is needed and running a cable out the back under the dash to the Bury cradle, ready to plug into the iPhone?

I’m assuming any competent car audio shop should be able to extract the head unit and plug the right cable in.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Car stereo shops of no help so sorted it myself. Total cost $30.

One Aux cable from the AUX port on back of head unit to RCA connections, then another cable with RCA connectors to 3.5mm jack to connect to the iPhone (cost $25). It all works even when it's mounted in the Bury charging cradle. Cables hidden from view under carpet and inside dash. Need to control unit from iPhone as no display information on head unit. The volume can be controlled by either head unit or on the iPhone. Can still use Sat Nav and make phone calls whilst it's in the Aux mode. Same quality sound as the CD player.

$5 for four VW head unit removal keys.

About 2 hours of fiddling around to install it all.

      Well done on solving this.

I have a recommendation for you. Most of the head units have a SD card slot, I recommend ripping your cd's and copying them to your sd card. That way you can have volumes of books on 1 SD card.

I do it all the time, i have the entire collection of Harry Potter audio books (which i purchased legitimately), ripped and stored on 1 old SD card i no longer use for photography. Saves carrying 100 separate discs and they can be safely stored where they wont get scratched or damaged.
