  • Mk7 TDI Highline Fuse Box

Have other users noticed what a poor manual comes with the Mk7? — not even near the set supplied with the Mk6.

Not only is it often tedious to make sense of, in places it's not even accurate.

Today I had occasion to look at the internal fuse box (Page 365) and failed to find it.

Read the section in the manual, which tells you it's behind the right-hand storage bin, which you remove by releasing two clips at the bottom whilst pulling the bin out (sounds like it'd need three hands, but I s'pose it's possible.)

Opened it, no clips to be seen.

Then noticed the picture of the left-hand drive bin matched the one in mine, so followed the procedure for that and it pulled out much like the Mk 6 one did.

Only one problem — no fuse box, just a gaping hole.

Before I dismantle the car, does anyone know where the Mk 7 Highline internal fuse box lives?

Reason for asking — I've been given a HUD to play with and its power cable isn't long enough to reach the 12V outlet in the centre console if I route it neatly and clear of my feet, so thought to run a lead from the fuse box.

If the fuse box is where the book says LH drive cars have it, that might not work either (at least, not easily.)

I found I can also power it from the USB port in front of the gearshift, but then can't close the lid — nothing's simple any more...

Think I found the answer — looks like there ain't one...

Opened the external fuse box and it appears to have all the system attached to it.

They do need to update the book.

    More cost cutting, I suppose.

Mk6 internal fuse box is on right side of dash, you just have to clip out the plastic there (only accessible with door open).

Yes, I know — had one. It was the first place I looked and there's nothing, so RTFM and found it's wrong, too.

LOL, yeah, seems a challenge to interpret all the irrelevant bits from our manuals...

Look here, this is right hand drive, looks to be hidden behind glove box: GolfGTIforum.co.uk - An independent forum for Volkswagen Golf GTI enthusiasts.

Had a squint though the crack and it looks like that's it — they're right about the stiff catches, I couldn't move either of them (at 90+ my fingers ain't what they used to be.)

              Might have to use leverage.

Many thanks for the pointer — readers please note, if you must replace an internal fuse, ignore the RHD instructions in the manual.

Incidentally, the HUD proved pretty useless — the display doesn't work on the glass in daylight and I don't fancy a bit of dark plastic
on the screen in direct line-of-sight (think maybe the fuzz wouldn't either,) plus when you can see it there's a reflection from both glass layers.

Have got one of them ( A Polaris) and found you have to alter the vertical angle of the part that transmits the picture to give a more solid image.
In direct sunlight it is more hard to see

Also as the screen is neither flat or square with your vision you have to adjust the horizontal angle of the unit to make the figures look square on the screen.
I have a piece of tint on the screen and if you position it just below your line of vision its not a bother except in town when going downhill or around corners.

In Australia it is legal to have a piece of not more than 90mm sq

Best solution or fitting is to just sit it on the dash and try different angles in both planes until you get it right then glue it down.

Thanks for that — it was a bit cloudy yesterday and I could mostly see it on the bare glass.

I'll have a further play with it and see what eventuates.

If it's reading from the satellites is accurate, the Mk7 speedo is a little closer than the Mk6 was, but not a lot.
