  • Help me with using my phone in my new polo, can't for the life of me figure this out!

Hey, So I got a polo on Thursday (2011 my12 77tsi with sports pack, comfort pack and from what I can tell the Audio pack as it has an rcd510 premium 8. I assumed with all these gadgets there would be bluetooth in the car, but Nothing comes up on my iphone 5s when it searches for bluetooth devices, and there's nothing in any menu on the rcd510 that has anything to do with bluetooth (not even a bt-audio option in the media section). So my first question is, if there's bluetooth hidden somewhere, how do i enable it or turn it on?
Second, I've tried connecting the phone with the MDI/MID cable in the glove box just using the white charging cable that came with my phone and the phone will charge, but a box pops up on the screen saying that this accessory is not supported so it can't connect to the audio system. Is there any fix for this?

I know I can just use the 3.5mm aux plug next to the cup holders but I would like to be able to connect the phone to the car properly, mainly for music but for calls too if possible.

Thanks in advance for any help! I've googled a bunch of things and gone through the manuals but nothing has worked or helped yet.

My understanding is that Bluetooth is a separate option.

You need to buy a proper MDI cable as that one only charges a phone or Ipod $80 off stealer or $16 on Ebay an Audi or Vw one will do

Great, so that will definitely work? Everything I found elsewhere just said other mdi cables wouldn't work with an iphone 5, and the only cheap ones on ebay seem to be for ipnone 4 or earlier. thanks

not necessarily as Iphone 5's have problems with lightning converters apparently.

In contrast an Android phone works out of the box LOL

From my experience the Polo has to have BT as an extra to the head unit. You can buy via ebay etc the BT pack that will plug and play with some research on how to DIY install. Do you have "phone" buttons on your steering wheel? thats a pretty good indicator that you have BT installed already. I did find hidden BT settings in my RCD310 HEadunit after experiencing problems with the factory fitted BT touchscreen (thats the not so pretty handset bolted to the dash in the newer VW's) anyhow since then i can't use the steering wheel functions but can have the phone in a holder and use the onscreen functions of the phone and BT thru the head unit as usual. Just misses all the functions the extra device has and the feature of steering wheel functionally. good luck Hosky

I bought the MDI cable off eBay and the 30pin to lightning converter from Apple and it works ok. I have no issues. I have the phone paired directly to the RCD510 and coded out the stupid touch screen thingy.

Ok, so I don't have bluetooth in the car obviously, there's a phone button on the steering wheel and on the head unit which made me assume it had it. I did connect my phone via bluetooth in my cousin's polo just the other day and the audio quality was horrible, so MDI looks to be the go anyway. It's expensive and hard to get an MDI cable for the 5s still, so going for the adaptor might be the go! I'll give that a shot and report back
