MDI cable for iPhone 5 Not Working

I just got an MDI to iphone 5/5S (lightning) cable delivered from America. This is the ebay link for reference:

With it plugged in it charges the iphone 5S however it doesnt play any music through it. Is there something simple im missing here? Anyone else had any luck with an MDI cable and iphone 5S?

I've not used that type of cable but of the 30pin to lightning adapters I've tried the following is broadly true.

Non Apple adapters do not work.
Apple Lightning to 30 pin adaptor does work.
Apple Lightning to 30 pin cable (8" long) does not work.

So it's no surprise if your cable does not work.

Your MDI could also need a FW update.

Problem solved. I upgraded the MDI firmware to the latest following these instructions.

MDI and iphone 5S now work as expected. Its great the VW lets you upgrade software/firmware.
